SPOTLIGHT

Meet New Mexico Representative Kristina Ortez

Co-Chair of CSG West’s Education and Workforce Development Committee

As part of our continuing co-chair spotlight series, we’re excited to introduce New Mexico Representative Kristina Ortez, who will serve as co-chair of CSG West’s newly launched Education and Workforce Development Committee . In our last edition, we featured her fellow co-chair, Idaho Representative Marco Erickson. Representative Ortez recently shared her perspective on New Mexico’s innovations, the education policies she’s most passionate about, and a few fun facts you might not know about her.

The theme of our 2025 CSG West Annual Meeting is “Innovating at New Heights.” What’s something you find innovative about Idaho – whether related to legislative work or something else entirely?

New Mexico excels at blending tradition with forward-thinking sustainability. From acequia stewardship to land-based education and community-centered workforce development, innovation here often means honoring cultural heritage while building for a resilient future.

What education or workforce issues are currently top of mind for you?

I’m focused on expanding rural and underserved students' access to opportunities, from early childhood through career. My priorities include strengthening dual credit programs, expanding apprenticeships and behavioral health workforce pipelines, and addressing barriers such as broadband and transportation.

Could you share something light or fun about yourself that’s unrelated to legislative work – such as a personal interest, fun fact, or something others might not know?

I spent time as a whitewater raft guide before working in land conservation and on housing equity. I still geek out over irrigation ditches and compost!

Arizona Launches Reentry 2030 Initiative to Strengthen Public Safety and Expand Workforce Opportunities

The CSG Justice Center recently announced that Arizona has officially joined Reentry 2030, a bipartisan, multi-state initiative focused on improving reentry outcomes for people leaving incarceration. Through a new executive order signed by Governor Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s Reentry 2030 plan will prioritize workforce development, apprenticeships, education access, and health care for justice-involved individuals.

In partnership with CSG and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR) will bring together multiple state agencies to coordinate efforts. By joining states like Missouri, Alabama, and Nebraska, Arizona aims to reduce recidivism, strengthen public safety, and build more inclusive economic opportunities statewide.
