Looking back on 2024, a year when RTD's employees shone bright

RTD and KCI Construction celebrate completion of the Broadway and Welton intersection.

RTD General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson provides remarks at a special news conference celebrating 50 million A Line customers.

RTD-PD officer Joe Rodocker poses with his K-9 partner Rayne in the snow.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “resilience” as “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.” No better word applied to RTD in 2024. Unplanned service disruptions, speed restrictions and required maintenance projects happening simultaneously put the agency in a unique position, all highlighted by the largest rail replacement project ever undertaken by the agency.

RTD employees took these challenges head-on. It wasn’t all doom and gloom, as RTD celebrated major milestones, new construction projects and incredible employee achievements.

As we head into 2025, take a look back on everything that made 2024 a year of growth and resilience for RTD.

Transdev operator's care for his customers evident all year long

From the outside, Duane Murphy’s bus is no different from any other rolling through the streets of Arvada, Aurora, Denver or Lakewood. It’s only when you step onto the vehicle that you realize this is THAT bus – and you are transported to a whole new world.

Bus operator informs customers of upcoming stops, connections

Yesterday, I boarded the bus at Louisiana•Pearl Station at 12:06 p.m. and got off at 18th and Downing streets. Our operator, Russell Whipple, was very professional. He named all the next stops and told us on the intercom what kind of buses we could catch at certain stops and where they'd take us. He was awesome!

From Wellness: RTD enters partnership with new EAP provider

RTD has selected GuidanceResources, powered by ComPsych, as its new Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider. This program provides confidential support and resources for personal and professional challenges.

All benefits of the previous EAP provider remain the same, such as round-the-clock, confidential live assistance for employees and household members and unlimited phone consultations. Employees who are currently using the previous EAP, Resources For Living, for any counseling services may continue with their current provider through their eight free sessions.

Safety and Environmental Compliance conducting operator outreach

Operators, have you seen a transit safety specialist in your facility’s break room in recent days? Over a two-week period that ends tomorrow, colleagues from RTD’s Safety and Environmental Compliance Division have been speaking with bus and rail operators to answer safety-related questions, show employees how to report safety concerns, and share tips on cold stress prevention and workplace hazard awareness. Team members have been stationed intentionally at Platte, East Metro and Boulder divisions to coincide with the current vote in Bus Operations, and they are visiting Elati Division to connect with rail employees.

Beyond the information that is exchanged, the purpose of the visits is to build trust and collaboration, said Serge Navarro, Transit Specialist, Safety Assurance and Certification. Navarro and his colleagues plan to be more present and visible at the facilities to which they are assigned. Safety-related details that are shared in these sessions will be brought to facility-specific management teams for solutions.

“Operators have a voice, and they can speak to us,” Navarro said. “Their voice is heard. We’re the ears for them.”

Nine years of the Flatiron Flyer

Tomorrow, the Flatiron Flyer (FF) turns nine! The FF routes (FF1, FF2, FF3 and FF5) opened on Jan. 3, 2016, to serve the US-36 corridor between Boulder and Denver. With six stations strategically located along freeway exits and slip ramps, the FFs provide fast and reliable service to the region’s northwest communities.
