RTD adds seven locations to elevator program

The expansion of the Customer Experience Elevator Program builds on the program’s success in reducing unwanted behavior and maintenance calls. Reprogramming public elevator doors to remain open when not in use significantly deters security-related calls and criminal activities at RTD stations – in many cases by more than 50%. Through June 2026, RTD has added Arapahoe at Village Center, County Line, Dayton, Dry Creek, Lincoln, and Thornton Crossroads•104th Avenue stations, as well as the parking garage at Nine Mile Station. More locations will be included throughout this year.

The 2026 Light Rail Rodeo is Aug. 8

The 2026 Ro(a)deo season is almost here, with the Light Rail Rodeo taking place 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 8, in the maintenance bay at Elati! Swing by for a morning of fun and games with colleagues and family members. New this year is the Rubber Chicken Challenge. Watch as light rail colleagues attempt to stop a train as close as they can to a rubber chicken tied to the track.

Volunteers are needed to support this and various other activities at the event, including judges for the basketball challenge, Lego races, mug slide contest, and cleanup. To volunteer, email Business Support II Terri Decker (terri.decker@rtd-denver.com).

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 2026 Snow Plow Roadeo on Aug. 20 and the 2026 Bus Roadeo on Sept. 19!

This week, crews in the Downtown Loop Midblocks area began removing concrete and existing rail on Stout Street between 17th and 18th streets, while drainage and rail system utility work progressed between 14th and 17th streets, and rail setting began between 15th and 16th streets.

In the Colfax Avenue Alignment area, crews continued excavation, installation of rebar, and concrete placement at the new drainage structures between Seventh and Kalamath streets. Subgrade preparation continued through the corridor while existing underground utility relocation was addressed. To support the drainage and rail system utility work, crews implemented a new pedestrian and bicycle detour along westbound Colfax Avenue between Seventh and 10th streets.

NTI to offer public involvement course at RTD in August

The National Transit Institute (NTI) is offering a three-day course on Public Participation in Transportation Decision-Making at RTD in August. This is a highly interactive course that will offer techniques to help participants acknowledge the full spectrum of stakeholders and community members; understand all stakeholders' and community members' interests and concerns; identify which engagement approaches are effective for all stakeholder groups; and conduct public involvement using integrative facilitation.

The course takes place from 8:30 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, through Wednesday, Aug. 19, in Conference Room T&D at Blake Street. NTI is offering eight classroom spots for RTD employees. Employees interested in attending should obtain approval from their manager or supervisor and register here. Participants will have time to practice public involvement techniques and strategies in class, including opportunities to work through the issues facing their own agencies and organizations and collaborate with other learners to create strategies to successfully address these issues.

Upon completion of this course, participants will, among other objectives:

  • Understand the relationship between, and effect of, public involvement and project decision-making
  • Learn various public involvement concepts, techniques, and tools, to support subsequent learning, capacity building, and execution
  • Create a public involvement plan with the ability to integrate all the public involvement concepts, techniques, and tools from the course

New bikeway overpass bridge installed over CO 119 median

On Friday, Colorado Department of Transportation crews installed a 50-ton bridge that will serve as a bikeway overpass over the 63rd Street median between the northbound and southbound directions of the CO 119/Diagonal Highway.

The new overpass will provide a safe crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians over 63rd Street, enhancing access to the CO 119 bikeway and RTD’s new Park-n-Ride on the west side of 63rd Street. It will also strengthen connections to the future CO 119 BRT service between Boulder and Longmont.

CDOT plans to temporarily close the 63rd Street median from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday to all modes of transportation as crews pour the concrete deck for the newly installed bridge. During the closure, 63rd Street and CO 119 will be configured as a right-in-right-out intersection. There will be one signed detour route for motorists and cyclists:

  • Northbound 63rd Street travelers: Turn right onto northbound CO 119, turn left at Colorado Highway 52, and turn left onto southbound CO 119 to return to 63rd Street
  • Southbound 63rd Street travelers: Turn right onto southbound CO 119, turn left onto Jay Road and turn left onto northbound CO 119 to return to 63rd Street

During these project milestones, please keep out of the active construction zone and follow pedestrian and cyclist access paths, as well as speed limits.
