RTD Transit Police K-9 units awarded for explosives detections

When threat detection requires highly specialized skills, RTD Transit Police (RTD-PD) K-9 units step in. RTD officers Corey Averill with K-9 Milo and Jesse Robinson with K-9 Reign were honored by the National Police Canine Association (NCPA) during a June 17 award ceremony for their assistance in two separate investigations involving explosives detection.

RTD launches mobile history tour aboard 16th Street FreeRide

RTD has launched a one-year pilot of a mobile-first, 16th Street FreeRide history tour, offering customers an enhanced travel experience along 16th Street between Denver Union and Civic Center stations.

The mobile history tour, a collaborative effort among RTD, Historic Denver, Denver Public Library, and the Downtown Denver Partnership, highlights the essential role 16th Street has played as a key connector since the late 1800s, tracing how the street’s development has evolved largely as a result of transit innovations.

During the past week, rail reconstruction was completed at the Seventh Street crossing, and Seventh Street was reopened to vehicle traffic on Tuesday, June 16 between Colfax Avenue and Curtis Street after a 10-day closure. In the Downtown Loop Midblocks area, demolition continued on Stout Street between 14th and 15th streets and 16th and 17th streets, while preliminary rail welding was completed on Stout and California streets. Crews inspected stormwater lines throughout the Downtown Loop area to assess current conditions.

Looking ahead, work between 15th and 17th streets is starting earlier than anticipated, as drainage in this area is more complex than expected and must be completed before track work can begin. Additionally, crews in the Colfax Avenue Alignment area will continue to focus on rail and concrete removal, drainage, and utility work.

During last night's monthly Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved an extension of the agency's 2021–2026 Strategic Plan through August 2028, adopted the 2026–2027 Internal Audit Plan, accepted the agency's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report into the record, and approved an amendment related to the G Line as part of the June 2026 service changes.

Additionally, the Board authorized RTD General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson to incorporate additional financial modeling into the development of the proposed 2027 Budget. The analysis will evaluate a range of potential revenue-generating and cost-saving strategies, including:

  • Legislative reforms for additional revenue
  • Refinancing opportunities
  • Labor expense changes
  • Assess potential ballot measure and other options for incremental revenue from taxes, fees, levies, etc.
  • Improve fare media activation
  • Increase real estate-related income
  • Reduce office space, real estate footprint, related intergovernmental agreements (IGAs), and non-revenue vehicles
  • Modify service hours in alignment with geographic considerations and utilization, modeling 5%, 10%, 17.5%, and 20% modification scenarios.

After a lengthy discussion, the Board approved a pilot program for high-volume event service, which would begin with the 2026 Broncos season. Board members also requested a project update in July regarding implementation plans and service expectations.

During the meeting, the Board also received a report from Adams County regarding a potential partnership to complete the N Line, and an update from the agency's Civil Rights Office and Long-Range Planning Department on the Bus Stop Infrastructure and Accessibility Assessment.

Information specialist’s quick thinking saves customer from rushing to catch A Line train

I want to thank information specialist Morgan Doyle for being so quick today. I called in just minutes before the bus I needed came, and she was quick on her feet. I found that the Route 38 was running a bit late, and it was worth catching that instead of running to Central Park to catch the A Line. Her being that fast meant I saved myself some walking, and I was able to catch a bus that was running behind schedule. Thanks, Morgan!

Bus operator goes out of way to assist customers during detour

There was road work along 20th Street between Sheridan Boulevard and Pierce Street, which required a detour. The driver, Erik Mercado, navigated the detour, even stopping for another passenger and me at a stop with no signs, just going out of his way to help us out. I was so grateful he was able to stop and pick us up; otherwise, I would've had to spend another $20 on an Uber.

RTD’s Technical Training team leads training sessions for law enforcement agencies on emergency vehicle shutdown procedures, response scenarios

On June 18, RTD Technical Trainer/Supervisor Jon Paul Mitchell led a specialized, hands-on training session for members of the Jefferson County SWAT Team, Colorado State Patrol, and RTD Transit Police.

The training focused on the safe and efficient immobilization of RTD’s Gillig, New Flyer, and MCI bus fleets during emergencies and critical incidents. Participants learned how to quickly identify and disable vehicles, safely shut down coaches from both the exterior and interior, and operate emergency door release systems.

The session also included vehicle access and breaching techniques designed to help first responders enter buses quickly while reducing risk to customers, officers, and equipment.

This hands-on training gave law enforcement partners practical experience and valuable knowledge to strengthen coordination, improve response times, and enhance safety during incidents involving transit vehicles.

RTD greets cyclists heading to work at Union Station for Bike to Work Day

Thousands of residents across metro Denver ditched their cars and the inevitable I-25 rush hour gridlock this morning for their bikes and pedaled into work for Bike to Work Day! The annual event brings together cyclists, businesses, local governments, and transportation partners to celebrate the connection between cycling, community, and sustainable transportation.

RTD joined other organizations, businesses, nonprofits, and vendors in front of Union Station to welcome cyclists downtown. Visitors to the RTD booth had the opportunity to play transit trivia, ask questions about upcoming service changes, and learn about the agency's Bike-n-Ride program and how cyclists can load their bikes onto RTD buses and trains to continue their journey.

Communications and Engagement thanks Transportation Planner II Mae Thompson; Project Manager II, Planning Lee Cryer; and Manager of Corridor Planning (Operations) Doug Monroe for waking up very early this morning to assist with the RTD booth, and Community Engagement Specialist Gabriel Martinez for running point on this morning's activation!

From Cybersecurity: Digital subscriptions and reducing risks associated with them

Millions of people across the globe have subscriptions to digital streaming services to watch movies and television shows, listen to music, store data in the cloud, and even track detailed health statistics. These services cost a small monthly fee but give customers many entertainment options to enjoy at home or while traveling. Digital streaming makes entertainment easy and convenient, but cybercriminals can use these services to steal personal information. Continue reading to learn how to keep data safe when paying for subscription services.
