Funding Infrastructure for Growth

The District invests tens of millions of dollars each year in infrastructure renewal to meet and sustain the needs of the community now and into the future. This work is guided by 15 Master Plans developed to help us identify and prioritize our infrastructure investments, maintenance and replacement through 2049, and a 10-year capital planning financial model to identify how to fund it all. Learn and ask questions with Mayor Karen Elliott and Acting Mayor Doug Race about the master planning process, how capital plans are prioritized and funded, as well as major capital projects planned for 2022 including facilities upgrades and the Wastewater Treatment Plant project.

DISTRICT OF SQUAMISH LAUNCHES $50 MILLION CAPITAL PLAN FOR 2022
The District of Squamish has committed to investing $50M in 2022 as guided by its master plans, to support the renewal of critical infrastructure and facilities, and the implementation of active transportation, and local climate action plans. District capital projects are funded each year by internal and external sources such as general taxation, utility fees, development cost charges, provisions, reserves, grants and debenture borrowing. In 2022, only $1.5M of capital projects will be funded from general taxation (property taxes). The District’s annual total capital budget over the last three years has averaged $41M per year to keep up with asset management and community growth.
HUNDREDS OF NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR SENIORS OPEN IN SQUAMISH
BC Housing Society has recently announced the Westwinds seniors housing development in Squamish is officially open, providing 232 affordable rental homes for low-income seniors in Squamish. The five-storey building located at 38275 Third Avenue features a mix of one-bedroom and one-bedroom-plus-den units with eight of the units being wheelchair accessible. Residents begin moving in today, April 8 and will have access to a range of amenities, including a fitness area, multi-purpose common areas and storage space for personal items, bicycles and scooters. Monthly rents will range between $767 and $990, depending on tenant income.

The project is the result of a partnership between the Province, through BC Housing, the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the District of Squamish, Squamish Senior Living Society and Polygon Homes.
DISTRICT WELCOMES HUMANE SOLUTIONS AS SQUAMISH’S NEW WILDLIFE COORDINATORS AND EDUCATION GROUP 
The District of Squamish has secured wildlife coordination experts Humane Solutions to provide wildlife services for Squamish, including wildlife education and community engagement with a focus on reducing human-wildlife conflicts. The Humane Solutions team will work closely with both the District and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service to identify wildlife hotspots, coordinate public communication and support, and implement the District’s Bear Smart initiatives across the community.  
 
“Because of our location, Squamish’s relationship with wildlife is a delicate one that requires our ongoing attention and stewardship,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “We want wildlife to stay wild, so it is imperative that we all do our part. Humane Solutions will take up the critical role to educate residents in order to mitigate and limit wildlife interactions. Our goals are twofold - to safely co-exist with wildlife whether out on the trails or within our neighbourhoods, and to protect the species that live here.”
PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE - HAVE YOUR SAY
A Public Hearing is being held on Tuesday, April 19 at 6 p.m.

What’s proposed: General Amendments to the District of Squamish Zoning Bylaw No. 2200, 2011, Amendment Bylaw (Patio Program) No. 2906, 2022 to add new definitions and change portable food vending, parking and bicycle parking regulations to allow and support outdoor dining patios.

A copy of the proposed bylaw and related information that has been or may be considered by the Council can be inspected online (learn more below) or at Municipal Hall, 37955 Second Avenue, from April 7 to April 19. Please contact the Planning Department on 604.815.5002 for any questions. All submissions will form part of the public record. Council will not consider submissions received after the close of the Public Hearing.
POP-UP RECYCLING DEPOT IN THE PARK
Calling all recycling champions! Bring your soft plastics/overwrap, flexible packaging and glass to Stan Clarke Park where our team of solid waste experts will sort, separate and divert away from our waste stream.

Please note this event is intended for residential material only. Additional recycling materials such as containers and cardboard, will not be accepted.

When: Tuesday, April 12, 5 - 7 p.m.
INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS AND IMPACTS
Mamquam Road sewer upgrades phase 1

Upgrades will continue next week on Mamquam Road between Government Road and Highway 99.

Time frame: April 4 to 22.

Please expect parking disruptions (some parking will always be available), minor traffic disruptions, and construction noise. 
Loggers Lane/Corridor trail lighting project

New road and trail lighting will be installed on Loggers Lane and the Corridor Trail between Finch Drive and the Adventure Centre.

Time frame: Intermittent construction between April and May.

Please expect minor road and trail delays.
Corridor Trail (south of Mamquam Road)

New trail lighting will be installed on the Corridor Trail from Mamquam Road
south to Highway 99 Mamquam Bridge.

Time frame: Intermittent construction between April and May.

Please expect some trail delays.
Annual Paving Program

The District’s paving program will get underway next week and work will continue through the fall. Be cautious near the work zones and follow traffic control instructions.

FireSmart Home Ignition Assessments - new dates added for Garibaldi Highlands and Valleycliffe residents!

Residents of Garibaldi Highlands and Valleycliffe now have more opportunities to get their free FireSmart™ Home Ignition Zone Assessment with April 28 and April 29 added to the calendar! There are still opportunities for District of Squamish Paradise Valley residents to book their assessments until April 13.

These neighbourhoods have been identified in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) as having an increased risk of wildfire - Don't miss out on this opportunity to receive in-person recommendations from a local FireSmart™ Representative on how to help reduce your home/property wildfire risk.

Notice of Short-term Rental Temporary Use Permits

The District of Squamish is considering Temporary Use Permits to allow for short-term rental use in secondary suites or coach houses at the following addresses:

• 1008 Windsor Place
• 1004 Tobermory Way

Copies of the proposed Temporary Use Permits are available for review at Municipal Hall, 37955 Second Avenue. Copies can be emailed out by requests sent to planning@squamish.ca. All public input will be considered by the District in the review of the Temporary Use Permit applications. Written and email submissions can be addressed to the Director of Community Planning and will be received up until 4 p.m. on April 12. 
Repair Café volunteers needed

The Repair Café returns to Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Saturday, April 23! Volunteers are needed in order to make this event a success. Sign-up individually or organize a group from your work or neighbourhood to do a clean-up. We welcome everybody to come out and meet your neighbours, and volunteer together to help clean up our community.

Filming and noise exemptions

A Work Permit has been approved for filming in various locations around Squamish from April 11 - 15. Local business owners and residents have been notified. Some parking impacts on the public are expected during filming. Location parking for film crew has been granted at the All Weather Fields from April 8-15.

Locations:
April 11 – Brackendale Art Gallery (parking along Govt Road, at the cemetery).
April 12 – The GOAT, Downtown Squamish – parking at Farmers Marker parking lot and on Victoria Street.
April 13 – Paradise Valley Road.

Noise exemptions have been granted for the following events:
  • Private event at Locavore Bar + Grill, 1861 Mamquam Road, on April 8 from 10 p.m. - 12 a.m.
  • Vox Rea music festival at Quest University, 3200 University Boulevard, on April 9 from 10 - 11:30 p.m.
