PUBLIC WORKS OPEN HOUSE POSTPONED TO JUNE 1 |
|
Due to inclement weather, our Public Works Open House has been postponed until June 1 between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Bring the kids and join members of Council and staff at the Public Works Yard to celebrate and learn about all-things public works in Squamish!
- Kids (and kids at heart) can check out the equipment, sit in an excavator, and learn about how the water and sewer system works in Squamish through an interactive display.
- Enter to win one of four beautiful District hanging baskets created during the event.
- Staff will lead guided tours of the public works yard throughout the evening.
Join us to learn more about the public works facility replacement plan and how it will be funded, and the critical role Public Works plays in our community. Light refreshments provided.

MAYOR FOR A DAY WINNERS 2022 |
|
École Squamish Elementary Grade 6 student Virginia Williams and Squamish Waldorf Grade 3 student Koen Tocheniuk had the chance to play Mayor and Deputy Mayor yesterday as part of the annual Mayor for a Day contest! The contest winners (along with a friend of their choosing) were treated to a tour with Mayor Karen Elliott and Acting Mayor Jenna Stoner of the District's Council Chambers, Fire Hall, RCMP Detachment and more!
The Mayor for a Day contest is held annually, as the District joins the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and other municipalities across British Columbia in celebrating Local Government Awareness Week. The goal of the week is to build awareness about the vital role local government plays in the community.

Landfill Lateral Expansion
The Squamish Landfill is on track to reach capacity in late 2028 to early 2029. To ensure that residents and businesses continue to have a local waste disposal option, the District of Squamish is working to expand the Landfill laterally to the east of the current Landfill. Perth Drive Active Transportation Improvements
We want to hear from the community about an alternative approach to active transportation infrastructure on Perth Drive. A grant application to fund active transportation improvements along Perth Drive was declined in September of 2021. The District continues to seek funding for this project. Until funding is in place, for the short-to- medium term, the District can either remove the existing bike lane to add a sidewalk or leave the existing bike lane in place. In both cases, the full build would be completed once funding is available.

DISTRICT WINS MOST IMPROVED LANDFILL IN BC 2022 |
|
The SWANA Pacific Chapter (British Columbia & Yukon) awarded the District of Squamish winner of Most Improved Landfill in BC, 2022 at the 37th annual Pacific Northwest Regional Symposium on April 29. This award is an acknowledgement of all the work done to ensure the site meets regulatory requirements, extends its lifespan and reduces related greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2020 an engineered 10m high wall was constructed around the south end of the landfill to increase the lifespan of the site, and in 2021, a landfill gas collection system was installed to collect and destroy the methane created by the landfill. Work to improve the landfill in both space and environmental requirements is ongoing and details can be found on our website.

BE BEAR AWARE THIS SEASON

With bears out and about, don’t forget to keep your totes locked and secured and only place them curbside on the morning of collection! Our Bylaw crews were out this week and found several unlocked totes roadside while not on a collection day. Please remember: a fed bear is a dead bear – let’s all help keep our wildlife and residents safe this season. Wildlife Attractant Bylaw infractions can be reported to Bylaw at 604.815.5067.
If your tote or lock is broken, the revised Wildlife Attractant Bylaw requires you to contact GFL immediately upon noticing the damage. Tote audits are underway, and information is being left on totes requiring repairs.

Did you know? There are 7 locations in Squamish to recycle your car or truck off-rim tires for free!
The Tire Stewardship BC Program runs a ‘Return to Retailer’ program which allows you to recycle your passenger vehicle tires. Fees may apply to remove tires from rims. Check ahead with the retailer.

Complete the business census survey and help foster a thriving business community
An in-person business census is underway to gather data that will help support business retention and expansion efforts, including employment space development, business programming, and services. Members of the local business community will benefit from tools, resources, planning efforts, and services which will be informed by this business census. Survey staff will be visiting local businesses and will ask business owners and managers to participate in a short 10-minute survey.
The survey is being conducted by Forum Research on behalf of the District of Squamish, the Squamish Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Squamish.

Seeking Board of Variance member
The District of Squamish is looking for one new member to fill the remainder of a three-year term ending May 31, 2024, on the Board of Variance and encourages interested members of the public to submit an application and resume.
Boards of Variance in B.C. sit to consider applications from property owners requesting variances to zoning and land use bylaws. The Squamish Board of Variance meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., as necessary, if an application is received.
Applications should be received no later than
4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

Notice of Avian Influenza in urban hens
The Ministry of Agriculture is warning residents of B.C. of a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus currently circulating through the province. The ministry urges all owners of small or backyard flocks to be vigilant and have appropriate preventative measures in place. Measures include eliminating or reducing opportunities for poultry to encounter wild birds, reducing human access to the flock, and increased cleaning, disinfection and sanitization of all things (including clothing and footwear) when entering areas where flocks are housed.
