Commendation for Exemplary Service to the Medicine Clerkship

Mentorship is a key component of academic medicine. We extend our gratitude to Drs. Ezra Gabbay, Elaine Gee, William Levine, and Charlton Tsai for recently receiving the Commendation for Exemplary Service to the Medicine Clerkship. Through their passionate involvement in OSCEs, tutor groups, and lectures, they transform the clerkship into a profoundly impactful journey. We take great pride in recognizing their outstanding contributions with this honor.

Dr. Margaret (Molly) McNairy Named NAM Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine

Dr. Margaret (Molly) McNairy, an associate professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been selected as an Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine (ELHM) Scholar by the National Academy of Medicine.


Launched in 2016, the ELHM program annually selects early- and mid-career professionals who have demonstrated leadership and professional achievement in biomedical science, population health, health care and related fields. Scholars serve a three-year term and benefit from mentorship, collaboration and innovation opportunities with their class, as well as with NAM members and leaders across various fields.

Dr. Margaret "Molly" McNairy

Lower Manhattan Hospital Launch: Housing Navigation Consultation Program

Lower Manhattan Hospital, in collaboration with NYP's Community and Population Health division, has launched a Housing Navigation Consultation program. A specialized housing social worker will assist unhoused patients in achieving their housing goals and accessing resources upon admission. Dr. Amanda Ramsdell is the MD champion for this initiative.

Drs. Andrea Card & Kimberly Bloom-Feshbach Awarded Grant for Serious Illness Communication Curriculum

Drs. Andrea Card and Kimberly Bloom-Feshbach are co-investigators and received the LHS and Health Justice Research and Training Award from the Dalio Center for Health Justice and the EQUIP Center for Learning Health System Science for a project to design a community-engaged, culturally responsive, serious illness communication curriculum and evaluation tool.

Dr. Bryan Leppert Joins CDIM Program Planning Committee

Dr. Byran Leppert has been accepted to the Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine (CDIM) Program Planning Committee for the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) and will serve a three-year term through July 2027. The committee is responsible for organizing the CDIM Track of the annual Academic Internal Medicine Week (AIMW), including reviewing workshop and poster submissions, selecting plenary speakers, and scheduling networking activities.

Program Updates

Addiction Medicine


Weill Cornell Medical Center was chosen as a pilot site for the National Academy of Medicine's Action Collaborative on Combatting Substance Use and Opioid Crises.


Dr. Amanda Ramsdell is leading a Core Competency Implementation Pilot Project amongst 16 implementation sites across the United States. In partnership with the Action Collaborative, the sites will work towards advancing substance use care, workforce competency, and inter-professional education and practice by implementing the Action Collaborative’s 3Cs Framework for Pain and Unhealthy Substance Use, released in 2022.

Patient Activated Learning System (PALS) - Communication Course

For the second year, the PALS is partnering with the Public Health Communication Course (VTPEH 6184) for Fall 2024. Four Cornell MPH students are collaborating with GIM physician-scientists to create health education articles on Diabetes. This includes reviewing literature, synthesizing articles for healthcare professionals, and developing patient-facing materials at a 6th-grade reading level, complete with visuals, soundbites, and assessment questions.

Expansion of the Weill Cornell Health Equity Research Internship

The Weill Cornell Health Equity Research internship offers CUNY Hunter College undergraduate and graduate students exposure to career opportunities in General Internal Medicine and academic medicine. Launched in January 2024 with three students, the program has now expanded to include four students this fall, each paired with a faculty mentor focused on health equity. Thank you to the faculty mentors, Drs. Monika Safford, Laura Pinheiro, and Erica Phillips.

Qualitative Research Basics Course by Dr. Sarah Young

Dr. Sarah Young has leveraged her expertise in qualitative research and created a 6-week course designed for GIM research faculty and staff!


With the course fully enrolled, Dr. Young is excited to bring a comprehensive curriculum covering qualitative methods, innovative data collection techniques, software-driven data analysis, and effective strategies for disseminating research findings. This dynamic program not only fosters knowledge but also encourages collaboration and practical application in the field of qualitative research.

Dr. Amanda Ramsdell Takes the Lead in Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Overdose to Action Initiative

Dr. Amanda Ramsdell is continuing Dr. Alexis Vien's efforts as a Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) systems champion for the Overdose to Action Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance low-barrier substance use care and reduce opioid overdoses, in collaboration with champions from Mt. Sinai Hospital and Northwell.

New WCM Medical Student Health Equity Elective

A new four-week hybrid course (MEDC 8187) is available to students focused on addressing health disparities and improving access to health information through the Patient Activated Learning System (PALS). Students will review peer-reviewed literature, learn to communicate complex medical information at a 6th-grade reading level, and apply educational theories to enhance patient education and promote health equity. They will also survey clinic patients for feedback on health articles and revise them based on Qualtrics data. Dr. Monika Safford is the faculty sponsor. Research Awards

Dr. Lisa Kern has received funding from the National Institute of Aging for a project titled "Understanding Ambulatory Care Utilization in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ACUA)" in the amount of $4.1 million.


Dr. Parag Goyal has received funding from the National Institute of Aging for a project titled "Post-Acute Care Medication Use and Functional Recovery in Heart Failure" in the amount of $3.17 million.


Drs. Monika Safford and Ro-Jay Reid have received funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for a research supplement to Dr. Safford’s R01 to support Dr. Reid’s early career development for a project titled "Reasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke-Myocardial Infarction-4 (REGARDS-MI-4)" in the amount of $241,538.


Dr. Ro-Jay Reid has received three grants:

  • He has received funding from Downstate Health Sciences University and the Primary Care Innovations Program for a project titled "Painful Disparities: Unveiling the Impact of Social Factors on Chronic Pain and Cardiovascular Health" in the amount of $100,000.
  • He has also received internal funding from MasterCard Research Assistance for Primary Patients (RAPP) in the amount of $100,000.



Dr. Erica Philips has received an administrative diversity supplement from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases on her previously funded project titled "Reducing Obesity Using Social Ties (ROBUST) in the amount of $161,758. The diversity supplement will support graduate student Anika Lewis.



Dr. Arnab Ghosh has received internal funding from MasterCard Research Assistance for Primary Patients (RAPP) in the amount of $50,000.


Dr. Alice Tang has received funding from the Institute for Primary Care Innovations for a project titled "Developing Faculty Champions for Growth Mindset & Deliberate Practice" in the amount of $25,000.
