HIGHLIGHTS

Restricting sales of tobacco products to people 21 and older could keep 11,000 Michiganders from starting to smoke, potentially avoiding premature deaths in two-thirds of that population, according to a new study by School of Public Health faculty Holly Jarman, Ph.D., M.Res., Rafael Meza, Ph.D ., and David Mendez, Ph.D., M.S., and their colleague Tammy Chang, M.D., M.P.H., M.S. from the Department of Family Medicine.

The change would translate into 17,000 fewer smoking-related deaths and 198,000 fewer smokers in five years if Michigan were to pass what's often called "Tobacco 21" legislation, according to the team's analysis. Seven states and more than 400 municipalities have already enacted such laws, and a measure was introduced in Michigan's House of Representatives in January.

Physical and mental health issues, hearing problems, and poor diet, exercise, and sleep all associated with lack of companionship and feeling isolated. One in four older adults say they feel isolated from other people at least some of the time, and one in three say they lack regular companionship, according to the National Poll on Healthy Aging.

People under age 50 with hearing loss misuse prescription opioids at twice the rate of their hearing peers, and are also more likely to misuse alcohol and other drugs, according to a new study led-by Michael McKee, M.D., M.P.H. This means that health care providers may need to take special care when treating pain and mental health conditions in deaf and hard-of-hearing young adults, the researchers say.

After decades of establishing its foothold within healthcare, telehealth appears to be experiencing a steady, if uneven, renewal. Chad Ellimoottil, M.D., M.S., talks about telehealth policy trends and research at U-M that aims to answer questions about the value of this long-awaited next frontier in healthcare delivery.

Efforts to encourage high-value preventive medical care may, unintentionally, increase the use of health services that provide little or no health benefit, according to Richard Hirth, Ph.D. and Mark Fendrick, M.D.
