IMET Fulbrighters
Did you know only about 8,000 Fulbright Awards are granted across more than 160 countries each year? Out of those 8,000, two have been granted to IMET personnel! Professor Yantao Li and PhD student Lauren Jonas have been awarded Fulbright grants for the next academic year! See below to learn more about their upcoming travels and collaborations!
CONGRATULATIONS graduates
We are so proud of the seven graduate students who have successfully defended their dissertations this summer. Their research focused on diverse topics ranging from shark immune systems to microbes that live in freezing temperatures. Each student's research could have significant impacts on the health of our people and planet. Congratulations grads!
Dr. Eric Schott Receives Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award
UMCES Professor Dr. Eric Schott was selected by the graduate student body as the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award. As advisor to three graduate students, LMRCSC Project Director, and IMET Summer Intern Director, Dr. Schott goes above and beyond to support emerging scientists!
IMET Summer Internship Begins
On June 6th, IMET’s labs and hallways got a little busier and brighter. The summer has started which means, IMET has welcomed a new cohort of undergraduate interns within its tented roofs. This is the 21st year of the IMET Summer Internship, which recruits students from underrepresented backgrounds in science for hands-on research internships. Dr. Yonathan Zohar named UMBC's Presidential Research Professor
Dr. Yonathan Zohar was recognized at University of Maryland Baltimore County’s Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards as the 2022 – 2025 Presidential Research Professor. Dr. Zohar's research on sustainable aquaculture is internationally recognized. This research has led to remarkable amounts of funding and global collaborations. Well done Dr. Zohar!
Former IMET Intern Featured on In The Know by Yahoo
Alexandra Grayson, a former IMET intern was featured on In The Know by Yahoo. While at IMET, Alexandra studied water quality and biodiversity in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. A recent graduate of Howard University, Alexandra hopes to combat climate change and injustice by bringing scientific data straight to policymakers.
Ben Frey: Intern to Graduate Student to Knauss Fellow
As we welcome our new group of summer interns, we are reminded of a student who sat in their place not long ago. Ben Frey completed IMET’s Summer Internship in 2018, began his graduate studies at UMCES in 2019, graduated in 2022, and is now a NOAA Knauss Fellow. Read more about Ben's incredible story below!
REEF Final Pitches
Students at IMET took their science off the lab bench and into the shark tank during the final session of the REEF program this spring. The Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship (REEF) Program at IMET teaches graduate students how to apply their research to the real world.
