Dr. Eric Schott received the highest honor that the University System of Maryland Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. Dr. Schott is recognized for his strong contributions to student mentoring and his passion for increasing the diversity of students following careers in the marine sciences.

Open House

Our 2023 Open House had over 800 attendees, making this our largest open house to date! Visitors were able to tour our Aquaculture Research Center, interact with Chesapeake Bay critters in touch tanks, enjoy educational science displays and explore art installations. This blog by Dr. Bill Dennison describes the experience of the team from the Integration and Application Network (IAN) that participated in our Open House.

Aquaculture Research featured in "Inquiring Minds"

IMET's aquaculture work was featured in UMBC's Inquiring Minds Research Publication. The article focuses on the land-based recirculating aquaculture work of Dr. Yonathan Zohar's laboratory. It discusses their work with salmon, collaborators, partnerships and the larger impacts of their research.

Colwell Center Naming Ceremony

This June we celebrated the official renaming of our building to the Rita Rossi Colwell Center. Dr. Colwell was instrumental in the founding of the Columbus Center for the purpose of expanding environmental science education and research in Baltimore City and it is most appropriate that the building is now being named for her as the Rita Rossi Colwell Center.

Summer Internship

Nine undergraduate interns wrapped up a summer of research, professional development, and collaboration. Students focused on topics ranging from mussel filtration, to algae growth, to horseshoe crab blood.
