We are so proud of the 2018 IMET summer interns. They learned new procedures and contributed to important research in our labs. They attended mentoring sessions and practiced presentation skills as they shared their research with all of IMET during their final week.

Kehau Hagiwara: from IMET Intern to Postdoctoral Fellow

When Kehau was a rising senior in college, she worked in Dr. Russell Hill’s lab as part of the IMET internship program. After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, she began a National Institute of Standards and Technology Postdoctoral Fellowship. While her fellowship was based in Charleston, South Carolina, she returned to IMET once a year to conduct research with Dr. Frank Robb. During her last visit to IMET, we had a chance to talk with her about how her internship influenced her career and what she’s studying now.

Faculty Feature: Rose Jagus, Scientist and Mentor

Dr. Rose Jagus has been involved in offering paid internships to underrepresented minorities in the sciences for many years. In 2018, she received the Wilson H. Elkins Professorship from the University System of Maryland. This award, along with funding from the Bunting Family Foundation, enabled 11 undergraduate students to intern at IMET this summer.

"Having a research internship as an undergraduate makes a huge difference to young people. It allows them to envision what they could do in the future . I tell all biology students that they should do an internship every year, and do something different every year, so they know whether they like to be out in the field, or they like the lab work, or they just like to crunch sequence information on the computer. It also allows them to realize what kind of coursework they should take."

Celebrating REEF 2017-2018

It is remarkable to see how the quality of the business plan presentations has evolved and progressed from year-to-year. This is a clear indication of how the REEF program is getting stronger over time. I was exceptionally impressed by the enthusiastic presentations that I saw this year.

As a participant in the REEF program, Ryan MacDonald developed his business, MicroArt. With the art kit Ryan designed, people can draw their own masterpieces using brightly colored microorganisms. This creative and fun kit can be a great introduction to microbiology for the artistically inclined.
