"Baptism of Our Lord"

Online Worship Through Immanuel's
(Click on the above link to access)
Dear disciples of Jesus at Immanuel Lutheran,

We have just welcomed in a new year. It’s a time of new beginnings. And new beginnings are a big part of our worship this week. Our first reading is from the first book of the Bible, Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth….” Our Gospel from Mark 1:1 announces, “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,” upon which Jesus is baptized and begins his ministry.

Baptism marks the beginning for all of us in our faith journeys. In baptism we are named and claimed as God’s beloved children, brought into a community in which to grow as disciples, and given our calling to use our gifts for ministry.

As we affirm our baptism in worship this week, may every day be a new beginning to live out our vocation as baptized Christians.

Your partner in Christ,
Pastor Gretchen
Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
Epiphany Star Words

Your new star word is available for pick up at the church! For the past several years we have given out these star words on Epiphany Sunday. Just as a star led the wisemen to the baby Jesus, you are invited to see where this star word might lead you in the year ahead. Put it up somewhere you'll see it each day, as you reflect upon what it might teach you in your journey of faith, and how it might lead you closer to Jesus.

ELCA Bishop's Response To Events At The Capitol
Responding to events at the U.S. Capitol, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reminds us that “this is not a protest. This is not only breaking the law but it is a threat to our democracy.” We pray for peace and safety for all who are in harm's way.
Church Council Update
Council Members: Les Gieselman-President, Barb Schmidt-Vice President, Renee Bergquist-Secretary, Lynn Clark-Treasurer, Pastor Gretchen Bingea, Lynnette Chandler, Tracie Johnson, Richard Keplinger, Jo Stensaas and Andrew White.

The Immanuel Lutheran Church (ILC) Council held a special council meeting Monday, January 04, 2021, at 5:30pm via online Zoom meeting. Below is a recap of the meeting, pending Council approval:

  • Approved Council Meeting Agenda (1/04/2021).
  • Reviewed and discussed alternative proposal to Finance Committee’s previous recommendation presented at the ILC Council meeting on December 14, 2020, to create a new designated fund for Critical Building Repairs. The December 14, 2020 motion was suspended to review compliance with the ILC Constitution/Continuing Resolution Finance and ELCA Guidance. The review resulted in an alternative proposal to allocate a contingency fund from 2020 General Fund Surplus rather than create a designated fund.
  1. Approved a new Fixed Asset Reserve to pay for critical building repairs in 2021 and provide an ongoing reserve for fixed asset replacement and repair. The Fixed Asset Reserve will be allocated by transferring $28,000 of the 2020 budget surplus from the General Operating Fund to the Fixed Asset Reserve during the fiscal year 2020 closing process.
  2. Rescinded the motion to create a new designated fund entitled, Critical Building Repairs Designated Fund which was approved and subsequently suspended at the December 14, 2020 Council meeting.
  • Reviewed and approved 2021 Annual General Fund Budget including recommended changes and new Fixed Asset Reserve.
  • Reviewed and approved proposed amendment to Bylaw C10.01.02 to delete the text “at least 30 days before the annual meeting” to allow committees/ministries whose reports use December 31 data to comply with the Bylaw.
  1. Discussed process for amending Constitution Bylaw C10.01.02 at the January 2021 Annual Meeting.
  2. Approved the Council Resolution Recommending Congregational Approval of the Constitution for Immanuel Lutheran Church dated December 14, 2020 with amended Bylaw C10.01.02 dated January 4, 2021.
  • Next Council meeting is January 18, 2021 (5:30pm), Zoom online meeting.
