When María and her family stepped off the plane at JFK Airport as refugees, they were fearful and uncertain.

From the moment they met the JFS team, everything began to change. “JFS was waiting for us to arrive—it meant everything,” María shared. “The agency was there to support us.”

A New Beginning: Language was one of the first and biggest challenges. JFS provided ESL classes, social opportunities, and a welcoming community to help the family find their footing.

“JFS gave us the tools to adapt,” María said. “We are learning, growing, and becoming part of the community.”

A Place to Call Home: When the family walked into their new apartment, they couldn't believe it was real. JFS also helped enroll the children in school, smoothing the transition. “We are overcome with gratitude, every single day,” she said.

Building Connection and Confidence: The ESL Buddy Program has been especially meaningful. María’s shy son found a close friend in Jessie, his ESL buddy and language partner.

“Even though he has thirty classmates, Jessie is the closest,” María said. “She’s brought so much happiness to his life.”

More Than Just Services: From documentation and employment issues to simply having someone who listens, JFS is like a second family. “We don’t just receive services—we feel like we’re part of the agency,” María said. “And that has changed everything.”

You Can Help Make Stories Like María’s Possible: At JFS of Greenwich, we believe every family deserves to feel safe, supported, and at home. Your support makes that possible.

Rachel Kornfeld, CEO of JFS Greenwich, and Irina Degtyur, Case Manager, attended the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) Women of Action Brunch. This year’s event honored two extraordinary women, Lisa Manheim and Ruthie Price. The awards were presented by Robin Kanarek, in memory of David Bennett Kanarek.

JFS Clinical Director Erin Tishman (pictured with her son) proudly represented the Bennett Center for Behavioral Health at Healthy Kids Day at the Greenwich YMCA -- a vibrant, family-focused event dedicated to promoting wellness and connection in our community.

Erin informed parents and caregivers about the wide range of mental health services JFS provides for children and adolescents, while raising awareness about emotional wellbeing.

JFS is seeking volunteers to deliver meals and snacks to local schools this summer and throughout the school year.

Volunteer drivers pick up and distribute food, helping ensure every child has access to nutritious meals. Your time can make a real difference in our community!

If interested, email Melissa Basile-Reolon to help!

We need volunteers/tutors who can dedicate two-hour blocks of time to help students via Google Meet. Students will log on to ask questions about subjects where they need help.
