New boats and great used boats are available now. Jump in and come race!

This past weekend, Igor Rytov and the Russian Bogatyrs were crowned Melges 20 European Champions. The Russian team holds a strong lead in the overall Melges 20 World League standings. With a brand new Melges 20, Rytov came into this season prepared to win.

In North America, Drew Freides and Pacific Yankee took the W at the Melges 20 Sail Newport Regatta. With this win, Freides successfully defended his control over the Melges World League North American standings, fending off the hungry Russian Bogatyrs. This event was the first of three in Newport this year.

The World Championship and US Nationals come to Newport, Rhode Island later this year. Boats from around the globe will be competing for these prestigious Melges Championships.

Cedar Lake Yacht Club shares their fleet building strategies

Wisconsin's Cedar Lake Yacht Club is in the heart of scow sailing. T he Melges Team sat down with Heidi Vollmar and Ed Eckert to learn more about CLYC's new growth and participation and how other ILYA yacht clubs can find this same success.

Cedar Lake Yacht Club's key? Creating a strong pathway for youth sailors. The boat of choice for CLYC is the Melges X Boat.

They chalk up the club's growth to three main factors: Learn-to-sail camps on X Boats, a rise in non-lake residents participating in the X Boat program, and active marketing for the club's family friendly atmosphere.

"CLYC owns five X Boats which we rent out for a season. This enables interested families to get involved in our program. Keeping all of our X Boats together on the club grounds creates a great social atmosphere for kids and parents alike."

CLYC has one day set aside for "X Boat Family and Friend Night," a non-scored night made for taking out non-member friends, a new crew possibility, or a family member to show them what sailing is all about.  New families can take out one of the club X Boats to practice steering.

"We introduce many kids to sailing on an X Boat instead of Optis. We find they like having another person on a team with them, and they feel more secure in the stability of the X."

Many of Cedar's established members sail and win with youth members on their boats. Not just on the home lake but also at national events. Paul Reilly just won the C Scow National Championship with young Austin Jaessing on the boat. "Sailing together helps the kids get to know the adults in the club. Sailing is a lifetime sport for families and friends to enjoy together!"

HUGHES WINS THE A SCOW NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Pat Hughes and the Melvin team were crowned A Scow National Champions. Alongside Hughes on M-21 was Harry Melges, Coye Harrett, Tony Jewett, Chris Jewett, Matt Ripkey and Mark ‘Doctor’ Christensen.

Minnetonka Yacht Club pulled out all the stops for the championship on Lighthouse Island and the surrounding waters of Lake Minnetonka. Twenty of these 38-foot yachts raced in the event. Melges A Scows are built in Zenda, Wisconsin USA. With six or seven crew, the A Scow is the fastest and largest of the Melges Scow family. Nothing compares to its century of heritage, delivering a combination of raw power, speed and performance unmatched in one-design sailing.
