OISE Reads - 2023 Holiday Edition

As the Fall 2023 semester wraps up here at OISE and across U of T, the OISE Library team is pleased to present our fifth annual Holiday Reads list! This year, the list highlights contributions from across the OISE community: students, staff, and faculty have come together to share what they will be reading and watching over the break.

This year’s list was a pleasure to curate. We love seeing what books our OISE colleagues and friends are planning to read and what shows they are planning to watch! We hope the list provides some inspiration and that this holiday season brings everyone time to read, rest, and reflect on the successes of the year. We have provided links to U of T Libraries copies (where available) so that curious readers can get more information.

We wish everyone a restful and peaceful holiday break. Happy reading!

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6, U of T joins communities across Canada in remembering the 14 women killed in a devastating act of misogyny at the engineering school at Montreal’s École Polytechnique in 1989.

A memorial led by the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering will honour the lives of women impacted by gender-based violence. It will include a musical performance and a keynote presentation on care, healing and justice.

All students, staff, faculty, librarians, and alumni are welcome to attend this tri-campus event to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

5th Floor Roof Community Garden & IEN Social and Cultural Practice Space: Project Advances as Planned

Construction is well underway on OISE’s 5th Floor Community Garden & IEN Social and Cultural Practice Space. This project is re-imagining the under-utilized 5th floor outdoor terraces at the podium level to create a dedicated space for community gatherings, cultural practice, study, and social events.

The renovation continues to progress smoothly, with this week marking a development many community members may have noticed; the installation of overhead protection for the IEN space along Bloor Street West. These installations will be in place for approximately one year. The projected completion date for this much-anticipated project is December 2024.

CGI Constructors, the company contracted for the build, applauded the project management group, noting that it is the first time they have partnered with an entirely women-led project crew. The team, pictured above, includes architects from Gow Hastings, managers with CGI Contractors, and colleagues from OISE and the central University, and they are proud to represent women within the industry.

To stay up to date on progress, we encourage you to regularly check our website for updates, renderings, and an evolving timeline of the project.

Thank you and Best Wishes

It is with both excitement and sadness that I share the news that Emily Hector, Liaison Librarian, Education, will be leaving the OISE Library/University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) at the end of this year. Emily has accepted a wonderful new role as Digital Learning Librarian at McMaster University Library.

Emily has worked at the OISE Library for the past 4.5 years and has made a tremendous impact across all aspects of the OISE Library. In her first couple of years at OISE, Emily managed the Access Services team, where she provided outstanding public service and ably led her team through the challenging early stages of the pandemic.

Additionally, she has made significant contributions to the OISE Library’s collections as the selector for the OISE Library’s Stacks, Children’s Literature, and Curriculum Resources collections. She has also made an enormous impact on students’ experiences at OISE through her work on our Personal Librarian Program and the OISE Library Student Advisory Committee among many other services. Over the years, Emily has become a leader in instructional initiatives at the OISE Library, designing and delivering hundreds of sessions, building learning objects, training colleagues and GSLAs, and developing a robust information literacy program for the OISE community.

Emily has positively shaped the academic careers of thousands of OISE students and many faculty members through her instruction and research support. She has also advanced pedagogical initiatives across UTL through her collaborations with colleagues through her secondment at the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI).

Emily is a truly exceptional colleague who will be greatly missed. Her last day will be December 19th, 2023. Please join me in thanking Emily and wishing her all the best in her new role at McMaster University Library.
