The Courage to Say What Needs to Be Said
Hosted by Andrew Silver and Amber Martinez Vasquez, this interactive workshop empowers participants to approach difficult conversations with confidence, clarity, and purpose. Focusing on conflict management, participants will learn practical strategies to initiate courageous conversations with both peers and supervisors, while addressing the common fears that often hold us back.
Through guided discussion and real-world scenarios, the session explores how to navigate tension, communicate effectively, and maintain professionalism in challenging situations. Participants also will discover and better understand their communication style while exploring how to manage conflict productively and build stronger, more authentic workplace relationships.

Reminder: Complete Tier 1 Training Modules by Friday, May 22
The five Tier 1 Student Affairs training modules have been assigned to all staff in Workday. This is a reminder to complete your modules by Friday, May 22. These modules provide the foundation for our new operating model and must be finished before you attend your Experiential Lab. If you haven’t already, you can sign up here for a June or July lab session. Thank you for your commitment to our student-centered mission!

Student Affairs Office Hours
Over the next few months, Dr. Buchanan will be hosting Office Hours for Student Affairs staff members. Staff will be able to join the Zoom session for open discussion and Q&A with Dr. Buchanan. AVC’s will also be available to jump in and answer questions or provide information as needed. The next session is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, from 11 a.m.-noon.
If you aren't able to attend the May 13 session, here are some future dates to plan for:

Upward Evaluations: After more than a decade, the College is reintroducing upward evaluation, giving employees a structured, meaningful way to share responses with their managers. All ACC employees are invited to participate. Responses are confidential. Check your email for a message and link to the evaluation (sent April 30). Spring 2026 Commencement: ACC is set to celebrate a record-breaking class at its Spring 2026 Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 14. More than 3,700 graduates are invited to participate this spring—a 12% increase from last year. Combined with fall graduates, ACC will recognize more than 8,100 students this academic year, marking an 11% year-over-year increase. Read more here.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month: May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. It is a time to honor the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of AAPI communities and highlight their vital role in shaping our society. Loan Zone: Help the Office of Financial Aid by spreading the word to your students about Loan Zone - a workshop where students can gain the confidence, tools, and knowledge needed to navigate their federal student loans successfully. Students can RSVP at austincc.edu/loanzone.

Demystifying Bats to Cats: Transfer success is a core component of ACC’s North Star goal. With the implementation of House Bill 8, which ties state funding directly to successful student transfers, prioritizing clear pathways to four-year universities has never been more critical to the College. ACC Foster Care Luggage Drive: This year, about 60 Austin-area foster youth will graduate from high school. When foster youth turn 18 and/or graduate high school, they age out of the system with nothing more than a plastic bag to hold all their belongings. ACC wants to change that through ACC’s Annual Foster Care Luggage Drive. Click here to learn how you can support throughout the month of May.

Theory of Change Network: Interested in joining the Theory of Change Network? The summer enrollment deadline is May 11, 2026. The Network meets monthly for updates on all things leadership and Theory of Change. Please take a minute to review the requirements to join and expectations for Network members. You will need some time to complete the enrollment steps, particularly the ToC badge, so plan accordingly.

Institutional Effectiveness Report Card Update: On April 23, leaders from across the College gathered for the Institutional Effectiveness (IE) Report Card Convening.
