Professional Development

New Employee Orientation

We’re excited to share that we’ll be launching the inaugural Student Affairs New Employee Orientation experience in October 2025. Student Affairs New Employee Orientation will be offered on the first Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each month, starting in October.

Typically, each month's cohort will consist of staff whose start date fell in the previous month. October will be the exception. We hope to capture any new hires since our last Staff Culture Training in July. Any staff or supervisors with a start date between July 14-Sept. 30 would be slotted to attend the Oct. 7-9 orientation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Highland Campus.

Supervisor Training

All new Student Affairs Supervisors will be invited to attend an additional day of training. For the October cohort of new supervisor hires, this falls on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Manager Action Items:

  • Please plan ahead and work with your new hires to ensure they are available to attend.

Preparing for Interviewing

Join Emily Demerath and Jana McCarthy for a training on the STAR method, a framework for concise responses to behavioral interview questions, structured to demonstrate your skills and qualifications for the job.  This opportunity will include time to plan for and practice your interview experiences.

Two hours of professional development credit will be awarded in WorkDay for the in-person offerings. A recorded tutorial for STAR interviewing will be made available for those unable to attend an in-person session.

Student Affairs STAR Training Dates Available:

  • Thursday, Sept. 18 (9-11 a.m.) - South Austin Campus, Room 1130
  • Monday, Sept. 22 (9-11 a.m.) - Highland Campus, Building 1000, Room 2350
  • Wednesday, Sept. 24 (1-3 p.m.) - Round Rock Campus, Building 3000, Room 3336

Ongoing Professional Development Opportunities

In addition to New Employee Orientation, our Professional Development Team will offer a professional development and training opportunity each month. We have curated these professional development opportunities from your feedback.

Each monthly topic will be offered in person three times. Most months, these professional development opportunities will be provided during the second week of the month with the following cadence:

  • Tuesday (9 a.m.-12 p.m.)
  • Thursday (9 a.m.-12 p.m.)
  • Friday (1-4 p.m.)

Professional Development credit in WorkDay will be awarded for each of these opportunities. We also hope to offer a recorded, asynchronous version for most topics.

Be on the lookout for a full calendar of Professional Development Offerings for the year.

The Theory of Change Network (ToCN)

Do you want to hear about Russell's vision for re-centering leadership directly from him? Do you believe in leadership at every level? Do you want to spend time learning with like-minded colleagues? Do you want to be a part of the "first knowers" network for Theory of Change - helping vet Design Team presentations and nominating Implementation Team members?

Consider joining the Theory of Change Network! We have hybrid meetings for 1.5 hours each month that will give you the inside scoop on all things leadership and Theory of Change. Enrollment is on a rolling basis each semester, and the first deadline is Sept. 22 for the Fall Semester. There are three steps to join, but they will take a little time, so take a peek and plan your efforts accordingly. Hope to see you there!
