A MESSAGE
FROM PRESIDENT JARA
We're nearing the end of the semester, which means the most stressful part of the year is coming up: finals. It goes without saying that this is a very tense time of year for many students, and it is crucial that we maintain a healthy lifestyle and a clear mental state. Check out the ASI event calendar for details on events such as Beach Balance Bingo, Project Chill and Food For Thought, all planned for your well-being while we push through our exams.

Additionally, on behalf of all of your student government executives, I would like to thank all of the students that attended any of our Take a Sec with the Execs events. Myself, Vice President Almahdi and Treasurer Luna received phenomenal input from the student body, and we had a lot of fun in the process. We hope to see you around campus in the future as we continue to process your comments and advocate on your behalf!

BOARD OF CONTROL
Tuesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
Last Tuesday, the Board of Control (BOC) awarded funds to:
  • Mildred Mendez - Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Society – Build a Blanket Workshop
  • Nicholas DaSilva, Chloe Van Grootheest and Amanda Martinez - California Estuarine Research Society (CAERS) 2018 Meeting
  • Lexi Stroud - Facility Fee Waiver for Panhellenic Council - Greek Awards

The following report was heard:
  • ASI Executive Director Richard Haller reported on the Grant Utilization Report, the search for a new Executive Director and the agenda for the next BOC meeting.

LOBBY CORPS
Thursdays - 2:30-3:30 (USU 234)
Last Thursday, the Lobby Corps met to discuss the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) and a Cal State Student Association (CSSA) presentation.

The body also discussed various legislation pertaining to undocumented students resolutions, as well as various other bills such as the Aim Higher Education Act, the Debt Free College Act and the College for All Act.

IN THE SENATE
Wednesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
Last Wednesday, the Senate met to vote on the following:
  • SR #2019-05: Support Trans Students (3rd and Final Reading) – PASSED
  • This resolution intends to solidify ASI’s support for trans-students and all other members of the LGBTQI+ community at LBSU by highlighting the advocacy and resources they provide.

  • Election of (4) IPCDCBOT Trustees At-Large – ELECTED
  • Minoli DeSilva - spoke to her experience and passion for working with children and how that makes her qualified for the position.
  • Linette Murillo - provided a written statement that spoke to her strengths.
  • Erika Rodriguez - provided a written statement that spoke to her strengths.
  • Melinda Than - discussed her background and passion for the education community and how this will drive her to be successful if elected.

  • SR #2019-07: Support Creation of Sustainable Course Evaluations (1st Reading) - PASSED
  • This resolution will support the creation of an electronic course-evaluation system that will replace the current model which requires over 1 million sheets of paper every semester.

The following reports were heard:
  • ASI Commissioner for Women & Gender Equity Affairs Kyla Sazon – reported on the work she has completed in the past month. Kyla’s involvement in several groups such as the President’s Commission for the Status of Women allows for advocacy through campus initiatives and other methods of outreach. Discussed goals and upcoming events.
  • ASI Beach Pride Lead Jonathan Ibarra – reported on behalf of ASI Beach Pride Events to discuss the success of past events and provide details into future events such as An Evening With Shiza Shahid and Week of Welcome.
  • ASI Chief Justice Robina Henson – reported on the recent work of the judicial branch, primarily focusing on grade appeals and various advocacy campaigns.
  • ASI Executive Director Richard Haller – provided an update on the work done by the various divisions within ASI such as ASI Communications, Beach Pride Events, Commercial Services and Facilities.
  • ASI At-Large Senators – reported on continuing advocacy for their constituents, updates on projects, programs, meetings and events. 

The following public comment was heard:
  • Yesenia Salguero – reported on behalf of ASI Communications to provide details on events such as Movies on the House, An Evening With Shiza Shahid and Casino Night.
