Hello, Long Beach State! Throughout the first three weeks of the semester, your student government has been hard at work advocating on your behalf.
In the contents of this newsletter, you will read examples of various government officials working hard to limit barriers on our campus. This work is crucial to creating a harmonious student body that works together to solve our generation's toughest problems. As the year progresses, we hope to hear increased input from you, our fellow students, in order to find the most creative solutions to these problems. The more input we receive, the better we can advocate on your behalf.
We are extremely excited to see how this year will be shaped by the Beach community, and we are more ready than ever to work with you all to make it happen!

PRESIDENT'S CABINET
Mondays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
|
|
Last Monday, the President's Cabinet met to discuss vacancies, Fall 2018 Conscious Collection and other student government affairs.
The following commissioners reported on the following:
- Citlalli Ortiz (AB540 & Undocumented Students) reported on a partnership with the Dream Success Center to create an AB40/Undocumented Student Scholarship, as well as the desire to incorporate an AB40/Undocumented Student Workshop into SOAR.
- Daniella Hernandez (Cultural Affairs) advocated for more outreach to on-campus communities such as the American Indian Association.
- Samantha Brown (Disability Affairs) discussed service animals on campus and suggested a transportation service for students with disabilities.
- Evelyn Wynn (Environmental Justice) discussed involvement on the Earth Week Planning Committee and collaboration with Sustainability's Holli Fajack.
- Vivian Napoles (LGBTIQ+ Affairs) discussed CSULB's rating on the Campus Pride Index, the possibility of having a "LGBTIQ+ Friendly Roommate" option for Housing, an LGBT mentor program and the continuation of the LGBTIQ+ Coalition Initiative.
- Kyla Sazon (Women & Gender Equity) advocated for better resources for assault victims as well as more non-binary professional resources on campus. Discussed future contact with Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness (FLAGG) for a representative to speak to the trans experience.

BOARD OF CONTROL
Tuesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
|
|
Last Tuesday, the Board of Control (BOC) awarded funds to:
- Chaleese Norman - I Resist: Strengths and Coping Strategies that Promote the Success of African-American Elementary Students
- Venus Alaee - 2019 Evolutionary Psychology Pre-Conference at Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP)
- Danielle Carancho - Western Political Science Association
The board heard the following reports:
- ASI Treasurer Jesse Luna - requested board members to direct college council leaders to them so they can discuss the allocation process.
- ASI Executive Director Richard Haller - discussed the upcoming mid-year report, a meeting with department managers and jurisdiction over student organizations' events at the Pyramid.

IN THE SENATE
Wednesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
|
|
Last Wednesday, the senate voted on the following action items:
- BOD #2019-27: Election of (1) Senate Representative to the University Student Union Board of Trustees (USUBOT) – ELECTED – SENATOR YEE
- Senator Yee spoke to her experience as a passionate member of student government with a keen interest in the affairs of the University Student Union. She expressed her desire for a deeper understanding of the USU’s many facilities such as the Beach Pantry.
- SR #2019-08: Mascot Referendum (1st Reading)
- The body discussed several aspects of the mascot selection process, including how stakeholders such as alumni, the athletics department and the current student body will have their voices heard in the process. They also discussed the functions of the process; President Conoley will view the most popular submissions and decide which one to bring to fruition. The body approved the resolution for its first reading, and discussions will continue at the next senate meeting.
The following reports were heard:
- ASI President Genesis Jara – reported on her recent efforts in the Executive Director search, a Young Women Empowerment event and the process of filling vacancies within ASI. Promoted ASI Night.
- ASI College Senator Reports – the senators shared their constituents’ concerns, as well as their goals, events, meetings, and other work completed since their last reports.
The following public comment was heard:
- Yesenia Salguero – spoke on behalf of ASI Communications to promote upcoming events such as ASI Student Government Elections, Beach Balance Week and ASI Night.

LOBBY CORPS
Thursdays - 2:30 p.m. (USU 234)
|
|
Last Thursday, the Lobby Corps met to discuss the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) and Bills of Interest.
The following reports were heard:
- Student-at-Large Reyalyn Villegas reported on a planned meeting with 70th District Assembly member O'Donnell in March.
- Senator Frances Canales discussed approved minutes, college reports and invited the committee to attend a Social Justice in Teaching event on Feb. 19.
- Senator Mateo Maya discussed the cancellation of Week of Welcome.
- ASI Vice President Leen Almahdi discussed the senate's passing of the 1st reading of the Mascot Referendum resolution which will go into the 2nd, 3rd and final reading at the next senate meeting.

USU BOARD OF TRUSTEES
First Fridays - 2:30 p.m. (USU 234)
|
|
Last Friday, the USUBOT met to hear reports on the various divisions and facilities of ASI. They discussed upgrades and newly proposed services such as the Career Clothes Closet and PantrySoft. The board also discussed AS Impact, a new platform designed to demonstrate the impact of ASI on students and alumni.
