Inside Student Government provides weekly summaries of all major board meetings within student government: the president's cabinet, lobby corps, board of control and the senate. Please take a moment to read the summaries from each section.
A MESSAGE
FROM VICE PRESIDENT ALMAHDI
Hey, Long Beach State! The semester is well underway, and we have some exciting updates for you. Be sure to check out what all branches of student government have been up to in this newsletter!
 
With midterm season approaching and holistic wellness being a priority for us at ASI, we are working on finalizing the development for Wellness Week, which will take place from October 21 to October 24. During this time, we will have an open house to showcase the various wellness resources offered to students at the University Student Union, Student Recreation & Wellness Center and all over campus. Come for the giveaways and free food - stay for self-improvement!
 
Finally, registration for the Students of Color Conference has officially launched! Any and all interested students are welcome to register on BeachSync and take part in this amazing opportunity to rise and resist. Learn how to be a better informed activist and practice allyship on Nov. 2 in the USU Ballrooms!

PRESIDENT'S CABINET
Mondays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
Last Monday, the President's Cabinet met to discuss their recent advocacy efforts. Topics included an undocumented and DACA legal clinic in the Dream Success Center, a campus census, upcoming Financial Literacy Workshops, the National Voter Registration Drive and much more.

Commissioners shared their ongoing advocacy and policy. Answering students' questions and providing for their basic and financial needs was a top priority of the discussion. The cabinet also discussed strategy for maximizing academic, recreational and cultural inclusion for all students

Members of the board shared information from recent meetings and goals of future meetings. Collaboration across campus was highlighted.

LOBBY CORPS
Thursdays - 2:30 p.m. (USU 234)
The Lobby Corps met last Thursday to discuss legislative visits, National Voter Registration Day and to begin coordinating their trip to the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS).

Faris Babinaeux was elected as vice chair of the Lobby Corps. They spoke to their strengths as an organized and dedicated student leader with relevant experience.

BOARD OF CONTROL
Tuesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU 234)
Last Tuesday, the Board of Control (BOC) awarded funds to:
  • Taina Gariglio Dias Coleman – 32nd International Conference on Computer Applications in Industry and Engineering (CANE) 2019
  • Erick Ruiz - 2019 National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Conference

The board discussed various BOC Grant Form revisions and heard reports regarding meetings, workshops and outreach from Treasurer Villegas, Senator Chiu and ASI Director of Administrative Services Martiz Ware.

Action Item Summaries

  • SR #2020-02: 100 Classes 100 Days - PASSED
  • This resolution has all ASI officers visit and present information in 100 classrooms on the resources provided by ASI while listening to criticism, concerns, and ideas to improve the relationship between students and their representatives.

Report Summaries

  • ASI President Lizbeth Velasquez – reported on continuing work to secure data for students, ensure voices are heard in the President's Cabinet, establish a legal clinic on campus and increase voter registration

  • ASI Chief Academic Officer Joseph Phillips - provided updates regarding the University Committee list as well as their goals for the next two weeks.
  • SRWC Assistant Director Christopher Huebner - shared promotional information and provided a report on the various programs and services provided by the SRWC.

  • ASI Executive Director Dr. Miles Nevin - commended ASI on the success of Week of Welcome and Smorgasport; provided fiscal and HR reports.

  • ASI At-Large Senators - the senators shared the work they've completed since the last senate meeting. They discussed students concerns and how they plan on addressing them moving forward.
