Dear Friends,

This month, we’re excited to spotlight our Partner Connect meetings, an initiative at the heart of The Washington Home’s mission to foster collaboration.

These gatherings bring together organizations to build partnerships and create impactful solutions for older adults across Washington, D.C.

In July, we launched Dr. Tanno’s advanced directives video series, guiding older adults on long-term care decisions. August brought discussions on dementia care, highlighting robotic pets and the Music Memory Café.

Our Open House in September allowed us to connect with partners, introduce our team, and celebrate collaboration.

In October we focused on healthcare workforce development, and in November we explored Food is Medicine, showcasing how medically tailored meals and groceries improve seniors’ health outcomes.

We wrapped up in December with an important conversation on hospice access, addressing end-of-life care for older adults in DC.

Thank you to all our partners who made this year’s discussions impactful and meaningful. Together, we’re shaping stronger, healthier communities for older adults in Washington, D.C.

Warm regards,

The Washington Home Team

In The Community

The Board of Directors and Staff of The Washington Home are pleased to welcome the newest member of our Advisory Board, Eleanor Tanno, M.D. of Advance DirectiveMD. With her extensive expertise in the care and well-being of older adults, Dr. Tanno is an influential leader creating awareness and resources to help older adults prepare for their medical care later in life. We appreciate her time and perspective to support TWH grant initiatives for our community.

Effective December 1, 2024, we have transitioned all grants to Foundant’s grant management system! Grantees are no longer able to access any documents in Submittable. Check your inboxes as you will receive an email with login instructions to access your new Foundant account. If you have any questions, send an email to grants@thewashingtonhome.org

Friendship Bench DC is an initiative by HelpAge USA that empowers older people to bridge gaps in mental health care. Inspired by the Friendship Bench model in Zimbabwe, the program trains older adults—known as “Grandparents”—to offer free, community-based talk therapy to individuals of all ages on wooden “Friendship Benches” located in safe community spaces, effectively addressing anxiety and depression.

Learn more about Friendship Bench DC and see our current list of Host Partners at helpageusa.org/friendshipbench/. To find out how you can get involved or host a bench at your location, contact friendshipbenchdc@gmail.com or 202-709-8442.
