Week of June 7, 2022

From the President

One of the University of South Florida’s values is our deep and abiding commitment to diversity – it’s embedded in our strategic plan and we strive to be an inclusive community in everything we do.

June provides an opportunity to celebrate both Pride Month and Juneteenth, allowing us to reflect on the memories of past struggles and honor the respective triumphs in the journeys of LGBTQ+ and Black faculty, staff, students and alumni.

USF is proud to support its LBGTQ+ community, not only during Pride Month, but also throughout the year with an active network of organizations that host events, provide resources and support. I hope you will take a few minutes to read this story about the history and ongoing impact of Pride Month, including more about the individuals and groups at USF working on important initiatives. We’ve also created an easy-to-use tool kit that provides downloadable graphics for you to use as a background on Microsoft Teams, display on social media and in other online formats.

Juneteenth, meanwhile, gives us a chance to pause and contemplate the importance of the holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. I encourage you to spend some time reading about Juneteenth’s past and present significance in this story that includes the perspective of Erin Stewart Mauldin, a USF associate professor of history and expert on the Civil War and Reconstruction. There is also a wide variety of Juneteenth events being held around the Tampa Bay region, which we’ve listed here.

As a reminder, Monday, June 20, is a federal holiday in recognition of Juneteenth. I hope the day serves as a way to raise awareness and spark meaningful dialogue about America’s tragic history of slavery and how we can take action to end racism in our society today.

Updates

• In case you missed it, last week Gov. DeSantis signed the state budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year into law. We are incredibly grateful to the Legislature for enacting, and to the governor for approving, the most transformative budget in USF history, including the largest single-year investment in operational support that USF has ever received. These investments will help us progress toward our strategic goals, including investing in student and faculty success, building our research profile, making a greater impact on the community and ultimately support our quest toward becoming a Top 25 public university. To read my full message on this historic moment, click here.

•  It’s that time of year when we need to be vigilant about the increased potential for hurricanes as the official season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. I urge you to review our newly published USF Hurricane Guide and have your own plan of action, so you will be prepared to act on it should a hurricane veer our way.

Kudos to the team at WUSF News for being recognized with multiple regional Edward R. Murrow awards, including the top honor for Overall Excellence. The Murrow Awards are among the highest honors in the country bestowed on any news organization. We're proud of WUSF for winning awards in six different categories in the Large Market Radio Division. You can read more about their achievements here.

• Please join me in welcoming Mindy McCord to the USF family, as the first women’s lacrosse coach in our university’s history. Coach McCord comes to us after a highly accomplished tenure at Jacksonville University and we’re excited to have her leading the development of our new program.

• Good communication is a priority for me, and I want to ensure we’re engaging with you in effective ways. As part of our ongoing process to evaluate internal communications, we would like your input on Inside USF: The Podcast and the best use of a USF-produced podcast. We would appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete a brief survey that will help us determine how to best serve you in the future.
