NEWLY FORMED SQUAMISH COMMUNITY HOUSING SOCIETY WILL TACKLE DISTRICT’S AFFORDABLE HOUSING CHALLENGE
The District of Squamish has established a Squamish Community Housing Society to increase the supply, availability and access to affordable housing options across the community and entire housing spectrum. The Society will work with the District of Squamish, non-profit housing agencies and the community to grow and sustain a diverse range and supply of affordable housing options as well as implement management and access efficiencies where appropriate.

The Society was formally established in December 2021 and is intended to be operational by mid-2022 once the positions of Board of Directors and the Executive Director have been filled, recruitment for which is now underway. Once operational, its first steps will be to establish a single point of contact and a waiting list for affordable housing in the community outside of individual non-profit housing providers, and assume management of affordable housing units that are being provided in new developments as part of Community Amenity Contributions related to re-zonings. It is anticipated that a number of these units will reach the occupancy stage starting in late 2023. The Society has also been tasked with the development of a new housing project in the community within the next few years with more to follow.
PUBLIC CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE DISTRICT OF SQUAMISH STREET BANNER PROJECT
The District of Squamish is once again calling on local artists who would like to see their artwork featured on the streets of Squamish. The District has announced the Squamish 2022 Street Banner Project which will see a series of artist-designed banners on streetlight poles located in Downtown Squamish, Garibaldi Estates, Tantalus Road, and Brennan Park Recreation Centre. A public call for submissions was launched by the Squamish Arts Council, and both Squamish and Squamish Nation artists specializing in any media are encouraged to apply. The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 21

“Our street banners add vibrancy and energy to our local streetscapes while their imagery often offers a reflection of our community and its spirit,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “Squamish is fortunate to have such a vastly talented artistic community and we are grateful to have the opportunity to use this type of medium to showcase their artwork to locals and visitors alike.”
WHAT'S ON AT LET'S TALK SQUAMISH
We are currently seeking feedback from businesses and community members to help inform an improved patio program. The improved program will aim to create a streamlined and equitable application process for businesses and enhance the enjoyment of patio spaces for community members in Squamish. The program builds on the Temporary Patio Program created at the onset of the pandemic to support food service businesses by creating a quick and safe outdoor extension of their restaurant or café.

The surveys will remain open through March 9.

We are reviewing marine access needs, priorities and recommendations for enhanced ocean access, safety and enjoyment for all, while protecting coastal cultures, shorelines and habitats. The review includes community, business, and industry ocean access infrastructure and amenities along the Mamquam Blind Channel as well as the Cattermole Slough. A boat launch special study will explore interim and long-term needs and options within the community.

Share your perspectives and marine needs in one of two community surveys and an online mapping tool through March 13.
