WHAT'S ON AT LET'S TALK SQUAMISH
We are currently seeking feedback from businesses and community members to help inform an improved patio program. The improved program will aim to create a streamlined and equitable application process for businesses and enhance the enjoyment of patio spaces for community members in Squamish. The program builds on the Temporary Patio Program created at the onset of the pandemic to support food service businesses by creating a quick and safe outdoor extension of their restaurant or café.

The surveys will remain open through March 9.
We are reviewing marine access needs, priorities and recommendations for enhanced ocean access, safety and enjoyment for all, while protecting coastal cultures, shorelines and habitats. The review includes community, business, and industry ocean access infrastructure and amenities along the Mamquam Blind Channel as well as the Cattermole Slough. A boat launch special study will explore interim and long-term needs and options within the community.

DISTRICT SEEKS HOSTS FOR SMALL GROUP CONVERSATIONS TO CONTINUE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANNING DIALOGUE FOR GARIBALDI ESTATES
We’re seeking hosts! We’re inviting interested residents to host a small group conversation with friends, colleagues or neighbours as efforts continue to develop a Garibaldi Estates Neighbourhood Plan Squamish. This next stage of engagement builds on what the District heard from residents in stage two, with the goal to further explore ideas, concerns, opportunities and shared values through dialogue. Efforts will be made to engage segments of the Squamish population whose voices have been under-represented in the process so far, including youth, seniors, employers and renters.

Small group conversations of between 10 to 12 people will take place during March and April and hosts will be provided with a Discussion Guide. A member of District Council and a staff member would attend approximately 10 of the small group conversations.
 
This conversation stage of the planning process will lead into the work District staff will do to develop future neighbourhood scenarios based on all input received since fall 2021. Development of scenarios is expected to take place between May and December 2022 and will be presented to the public for input once prepared.
UPCOMING PUBLIC HEARING - HAVE YOUR SAY
To rezone properties located at 1100 Hunter Place, 1120 Hunter Place, and 1140 Hunter Place from a split zone of Light Industrial (I-1) and Downtown Commercial (C-4) to the new Comprehensive Development Zone No. 99.

A Public Hearing will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. on the proposed rezoning of the properties noted above to a CD-99 zone which would permit a mixed-use residential and commercial development, consisting of several mixed-use buildings and one office building. The buildings would be connected by a common courtyard at grade, with parking below grade. The development proposes a Floor Area Ratio of 1.7 with 30% of the overall floor area dedicated employment space.
2022 SHORT-TERM RENTAL TEMPORARY USE PERMIT SUBMISSIONS CLOSING SOON
On January 11, Council endorsed a single 2022 call for Short-Term Rental (STR) Temporary Use Permits (TUPs) for residents who wish to operate an STR at their non-principal residence (STRs are not permitted in accessory dwelling units such as secondary suites or coach houses unless a TUP is successfully obtained).

The District will issue up to 18 STR TUPs to allow for short-term rental of non-principal residences on a temporary basis (initial two-year term) and are intended to support tourism while protecting rental housing stock in the community. The deadline to apply for a TUP is February 28.
NOTICE OF TEMPORARY USE PERMIT APPLICATION
An application is being considered for a Temporary Use Permit to allow for Business and Professional Office, Minor in the single-unit dwelling at 1358 Main Street (see map) in a Light Industrial zone (I-1).

A copy of the proposed Temporary Use Permit No. DTU00022 can be emailed out by requests sent to [email protected], from February 17 to March 4. The documents can also be reviewed on the District’s online Development Showcase at squamish.ca/showcase. Enquiries regarding the proposed Development Permit may be made to the Planning Department at 604.815.5002.

Persons who believe that their interest in property is affected by the proposed temporary use permit may submit written submissions to planning@squamish. ca or, in person to the Director of Community Planning. Written submissions can be addressed to the Director of Community Planning and will be received up until 4 p.m. March 4.
NOTICE OF PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE AND LAND TRANSFER 
The District of Squamish intends to transfer to Polygon Development 315 Ltd., 672.3m2 of Dowad Drive (see Closed Road on map below). This area will be built out as road as part of the Garibaldi Springs Development (“GSD”), and a sizeable retaining wall will be built on the eastern portion of the Closed Road. Public access will be maintained. 

Notice of Road Closure: Closing Highway Right of Way on Dowad Drive 
The District of Squamish gives notice of its intention to close to traffic 672.3m2 dedicated as “Highway Right of Way” on Dowad Drive labeled “Closed Road” on the sketch plan below. The dedication of the “Highway Right of Way” is removed and cancelled. 

Notice of Transfer: The District of Squamish also gives notice that if Council adopts the Bylaw, the District of Squamish intends to transfer fee simple title to the Closed Road to Polygon Development 315 Ltd. for the purpose of consolidating the Closed Road with the adjacent parcel located at 2100 Newport Ridge Drive As consideration for the transfer of Closed Road, the District shall receive $1, from Polygon Development 315 Ltd.

Council will consider the District of Squamish Garibaldi Springs Road Closure Bylaw No. 2873, 2021, closing the Highway Right of Way and removing its dedication at its Regular Meeting on Tuesday March 1. Persons who consider they are affected by the bylaw may make representations to Council and should deliver a written submission to the General Manager of Corporate Services, or inform the General Manager of Corporate Services of their intention to make an oral representation, by 1 p.m. on February 25.
RECYCLING TIP OF THE WEEK
Throughout February, we will feature a different area of your home to see what can be recycled. The third stop on our tour is the Laundry Room! A lot of these recyclables look similar to the bathroom, including aerosol containers (like air freshener sprays), hard plastic containers (like laundry soap or other cleaning products) and paper boxboard containers. These can all be recycled curbside once they are fully empty.

FireSmart HOME IGNITION ZONE ASSESSMENTS
Spaces are still available to interested residents of Garibaldi Highlands, Valleycliffe and District of Squamish residents of Paradise Valley for a free FireSmart Home Assessment.

FireSmart Representatives will operate under the guidance of current Provincial Health Orders (PHO) and ensure health and safety protocols are maintained.

THE SQUAMISH BUSINESS CENSUS SURVEY HAS BEEN EXTENDED
Forum Research is conducting a business census on behalf of the District of Squamish, Squamish Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Squamish. This 10-minute survey will collect information relating to your business operations including details regarding your premises, labour force, and business focus. The resulting information collected will be used to inform policy, programs, and services for local businesses.

Results will be used to support business retention and expansion efforts, including employment space development, business programming and services. Your responses will be kept strictly confidential. All data will be securely collected by Forum Research and securely stored by the District.
COMMUNITY NOTICES AND EVENTS
Internal emergency alarm system to be tested at Squamish Terminals February 25 

Squamish Terminals will be testing a new emergency alarm system on Friday, February 25 at 1 p.m. that will be used in the event of an emergency contained within the Squamish Terminals site, such as a workplace accident or fire. Because of the noisy nature of Squamish Terminals’ operations, the alarm system is required to be quite loud and will be heard from outside the property. Residents may hear a long blast like a ship horn in 15-20 second intervals while testing is underway. Please be assured there is no cause for public safety concern and there is no action required by residents. This is just a test. The testing will be conducted at the Squamish Terminals site located at 37500 Third Avenue.

Temporary trail closure notice/Tree removal alert

The Discovery Trail between Government Road and Pioneer Way will be closed from through February 25 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. as the contractor for the Pioneer Way Extension project removes trees and vegetation.  The trees and vegetation removal are required to make way for the new road, which will form a major entry into the Business Park and create a more direct route north/south. The project was prioritized in the 2031 Multimodal Transportation Plan and will also include sidewalks, a paved multi-use separated pathway, roadway lighting, new storm infrastructure, and the upgrade of the Discovery Trail to Government Road. 
Temporary Trail Closure and Detour Notice: Discovery Trail
 
The Discovery Trail will be closed between Carson Place and Madill Street on February 22 between approximately 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow for stormwater system installation for the Spirit Creek Apartments (formally referred to as the Buckley Avenue Affordable Rental Housing Project). A detour route will be in place. Please obey all signage and barricades while this work is being completed. 
 

North Crumpit Community Survey 

Diamond Head Land Company Ltd. is in the process of preparing a Neighbourhood Plan for the area in Squamish referred to as North Crumpit. 

As part of the application, the North Crumpit Project Team is hosting a second community survey to help inform the development of future land-use options at North Crumpit.
