Meet the Bungalow Chef, Michael Mech!

I have a passion for old family recipes and adore how just the mention of them will start people talking about a favorite dish from their past and a reminiscent story that surrounds it. From my 1926 Chicago style bungalow, I share, prepare and tell stories of my family's favorite recipes using the freshest ingredients from my garden, and classic cooking techniques. I hope to inspire you to bring yesterday's dishes to today's kitchen table and create new food memories for your family.

Cream of Asparagus Soup

After the long cold winter, a sure sign of spring are the little pips pushing through the barren earth. And with me being a bit Dutch, Tulips always put a smile on my face. While the flowers of spring bring joy to so many homeowners, chefs sing a song of delight as the first local asparagus becomes available. Tender, and ready for an array of creative deliciousness!   View recipe here.

It's the perfect weather for giving your historic windows a good spring cleaning to get rid of dirt left over from the snow and frost. Chicago Bungalow & Vintage Home Expo North a Success!
HCBA's Chicago Bungalow & Vintage Home Expo  came back again, this time on the North side! Expo North attracted over 500 visitors on April 18, at the McFetridge Sports Center - the second of two neighborhood versions. Instead of one annual downtown location as in the past, HCBA brought the Expo to the neighborhoods.

"After the success of Expo South this past October, we are thrilled to bring the Expo to the North side," said Mary Ellen Guest, Executive Director of the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association. "As the economy recovers, more and more people are ready and excited to stay put and invest in their homes, making it more important than ever to make the Expo accessible, and connect homeowners with trusted professionals who possess the skills and products needed to adapt and maintain our homes, as well as make them more energy-efficient."

Homeowners and potential homebuyers were drawn by the prospect of over
50 exhibitors who offered products and expertise on everything from energy efficient upgrades, rehabbing woodwork, and home financing.

Also present were members from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), who provided free face-to-face consultations on how to update vintage homes, add new rooms or convert attics and basements into more usable space. Visitors were lined up to meet the architects with their ideas and photos in hand.

On each of the 4 corners of the event space, HCBA's wonderful seminar presenters hosted live ongoing demonstrations - everything from masonry repair by Marion Machnicki of Marion Restoration, wood refinishing by Peter's Wood Refinishing, to Chicago art glass repair by Harmony Art Glass.

Food trucks were parked outside, and a DJ spun beats of the vintage era while Chicago families perused the expert exhibitor booths for information and resources on how to maintain and upgrade their homes.

In case you missed the event, you can access an online version of the   Resource Guide , which was distributed at the event.

Devon Avenue is today one of Chicago's most ethnically diverse neighborhoods and in recent years has become the heart of Chicago's South Asian Community, but it remains deeply in flux.  Once a major Jewish community, ethnic change has left its mark on the built environment of this vital intersection of ethnic Chicago. This tour will engage the commercial districts of Devon Avenue as well as the National Register Historic District bungalow community of West Rogers Park.
