Window Campaign Tidbit
Winter is Here, Time to Tackle the Drafts!
For that historic wood window that just won't lock close, try making an interior air panel to help reduce winter drafts. This affordable and reusable interior storm option will help prevent air infiltration during cold months until the necessary window repairs can be made in the spring. Remember, just because your original window won't close doesn't mean it's broken! Consult HCBA's original window resources before considering replacement!

Let us know how you did on our Member Forum "Over the Fence" where you can seek and share advice!

Is 2014 the year you will submit a project for our 10th annual awards? For your inspiration, the 2013 award winners' projects are displayed on HCBA's Driehaus Awards webpage (additional photos of individual projects will be posted soon).

Also, some exciting news- we will be adding a "Window Restoration" category due to the overwhelming amount of window restoration submissions we had this year. That said, get out there this Spring and restore those original beauties!

A Year in Review: HCBA Report Card
2013 was a successful year for HCBA. Through our Energy Savers grant program, we completed 600 energy efficiency retrofits for our members and replaced 430 appliances with new Energy Star models. These grants help make bungalows more comfortable, lower energy bills and help the environment.

HCBA conducted a record 35 free educational seminars last year! At the request of our members, we launched a new set of seminars on basement flooding and storm water management in partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and the City of Chicago Department of Water Management. We look forward to expanding these offerings during the Spring 2014 Seminar Series.

We began work on the nomination process for our 11th National Register Historic District in Portage Park. We look forward to working on this project with Alderman Tim Cullerton and community residents.

And lastly, we honored Chicago businessman and philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus with our inaugural Angel Guild award at a fundraising breakfast on December 5th. Our work would not be possible without the support of Mr. Driehaus, who grew up in a bungalow on the south side. Great thanks to all who attended and we hope you will be able to join us at our next event.

Design Inspiration
Think Pink: Why HCBA Loves Pink Bathrooms

Hey bungalistas, think pink bathrooms are outdated? Think

again! Think retro, think timeless, think Marilyn Monroe! Pink is the chosen color as it is considered to be the best color to suit the skin tone when applying make up in the bathroom. Pink bathrooms are also a ubiquitous feature of early twentieth century homes, like our beloved bungalows.

HCBA staff especially enjoyed this years beautiful restoration work Joyce Ramos and her husband did to refresh their tired bathroom (while retaining its original pink). Take a look at their award winning bathroom restoration project below:
