Inside the Festival Artist Development Program

Emerging musicians from the Okanagan and Shuswap/North Thompson are invited to submit for the second annual Inside the Festival artist development opportunity!


The Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES Festival, which takes place August 16 - 19th, 2018, is reaching out to Okanagan and Shuswap/North Thompson musicians to support their development through a partnership with Creative Okanagan Artist and Event Development Society.

This is the second time running the program after great success with the inaugural program in 2017. The selected artists selected for the inaugural year of the program was Tiger Moon, a duo comprised of Dan Tait and Kasey Graff based out of Kelowna. "The program helped Tiger Moon widen their fan base, learn about the inner workings of playing a large festival and grow their network in the Okanagan music community," says Karma Lacoff, Executive and Creative Director of Creative Okanagan.


The Inside the Festival program application can be found on the Creative Okanagan website at http://www.creativeokanagan.com/roots--blues-artist-development-application.html and will be open until Thursday, June 6 at noon.
Okanagan artist(s) performing music within the genres of roots and blues, can apply to participate in the program. The program consists of:
  • Meeting with Creative Okanagan Creative Director prior to the festival to do a performance review, go over what to expect at the festival, and to consider performance opportunity details.
  • Two 40-minutes performance opportunities on the Wednesday or Thursday night before the ROOTSandBLUES Festival, a Friday night workshops (to be determined by the ROOTSandBLUES Artistic Director) or Saturday morning brunch outreach event.
  • Back stage passes to for the festival weekend.
  • Meet with ROOTSandBLUES Artistic Director during the festival.
  • Assistance connecting with media by Creative Okanagan at the festival (as determined by Creative Okanagan and ROOTSandBLUES).
  • $500 honorarium.
  • Accommodations for band members (up to two hotel rooms).
Criteria:
  • Artist or band must perform music stemming from the roots and/or blues traditions. Music performed may be primarily covers. Quality of performance will be primary selection criteria.
  • Members must have been residents of the Okanagan including the Shuswap/North Thompson for one year (same boundaries as the Okanagan Regional Library).
  • Artist has not previously been hired to play the ROOTSandBLUES Festival.
  • Required to submit a brief statement on goals as a musician and a CV including recent activities as a musician (tours/shows/albums/digital activities/website link).
  • Applicant(s) must be a musician capable of playing a forty-minute set in a professional manner, this may be a subset of a larger band, acts of all sizes will be considered.
  • Artists must be available to attend Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES Festival, August 16 - 19, 2017.
Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at noon.

Selection process: Creative Okanagan will ensure all criteria are met and create a short list to pass on to the Artistic Director of the ROOTSandBLUES Festival.

The selected applicant(s) will be notified by June 28, 2018.
