GWCF leads cultural planning for Worcester

On Saturday, October 27, the Foundation, in partnership with the City of Worcester and the Worcester Cultural Coalition, convened nearly 100 community members for some good, old-fashioned brainstorming.

Lead by facilitators Tom Borrup and Harry Waters, Jr. of Creative Community Builders based in Minneapolis, participants spent the day voicing their hopes for how arts, culture and creativity can contribute to the growth and vibrancy of Worcester. An area of focus was the city’s tremendous cultural diversity and the experiences of youth and families.

This planning process represents a key stage in the development of a Cultural Plan for the City of Worcester. So stay tuned! A draft of the plan is expected in early December.
“Arts and culture are essential to the success and vibrancy of any city not only because they create jobs and drive economies , but also because of what the arts and creative sector contributes to residents’ quality of life."
Edward M. Augustus Jr.

20 years later and still growing the good
After Michael Minty passed away from liver cancer in 1988, members of the Worcester Rugby Football Club (WRFC) established a scholarship fund at the Foundation to honor the memory of their dedicated and charismatic coach and co-founder. But that's not all.

The WRFC came up with another creative way to commemorate Michael's spirit, as well as the memories of other lost Club members: an annual rugby tournament.
The Callaghan Cup is a celebration of sportsmanship and community. And this year, it raised over o ver $1,000 for the Michael Minty Memorial Scholarship Fund!

Scholarships at GWCF do more than help students fund their higher education goals. They bring communities closer together .
