BUDDY'S HOME FURNISHINGS CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING

The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting on July 29, 2022, to celebrate the Grand Opening of Buddy's Home Furnishings (formerly Hometown Rentals) located at 1280 Smithfield Plaza. Elected officials and Chamber Board members participated in the event. The store offers a large selection of name brand furniture, appliances, electronics, computers and more!

Record-Breaking Ribbon Cutting

The Isle of Wight County Chamber of Commerce hosted a record-breaking Ribbon Cutting celebration on September 1, 2022, to officially welcome Hamtown Mercantile and 24 of its boutique businesses to 223 Main Street in Smithfield. The shop offers a wide range of artisans & merchants bringing local sophisticated goods to the community. Local elected officials, Chamber Board members, family and friends attended the event, which included live music, food and prizes.

Hampton Roads Workforce Council Awarded

$11 Million Good Jobs Grant

On August 3, 2022 the US Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration, announced an $11 million training grant for the Hampton Roads Workforce Council focusing on the maritime, ship repair, offshore wind and infrastructure construction sectors.

The grant will provide training for industry-recognized credentials in skilled trades with an emphasis on workers from underserved and underrepresented communities. People trained under the grant will be matched with partnering employers for guaranteed interviews. READ FULL PRESS RELEASE

Virginia Community College System Launches

Virginia Infrastructure Academy

Virginia’s Community Colleges are gearing up to train thousands of workers to help rebuild the commonwealth’s aging roads and bridges and bring much needed upgrades to airports, ports and utilities statewide. The Virginia Infrastructure Academy (VIA) launched August 11, 2022, at the Workforce Development Center at Camp Community College in Franklin. Local and state dignitaries, business owners, students, and staff from the 23 community colleges were on hand for the event. VIA will coordinate, scale up and replicate successful infrastructure-related community college training programs, which now produce 4,000 graduates annually, with a goal of producing 35,000 qualified workers over the next five years. READ FULL PRESS RELEASE
