Residents didn't have to look far

for a retirement destination

When Dr. Bruce Hopper and his wife of 62 years, Dorrie, moved to White Horse Village this past fall, this community was not new to them by any means. Bruce, who previously lived in Devon, served as a board member for White Horse Village for 15 years, including at one time as the chair. During his time on the board, a number of major projects were completed, including the construction of the Woodlands homes. “I enjoyed it very much,” he says. Dorrie’s parents had also been residents here.

“We looked at other places, and just liked the general feeling of White Horse Village,” he explains. “It’s a very friendly place.” They also liked the spaciousness of the campus.

Bruce and Dorrie have settled into a villa in the Alydar neighborhood, which they’ve enjoyed very much so far. They see familiar faces around campus—Bruce notes that many of his former patients, from his years as an obstetrician-gynecologist, live here.

He likes the sociability of the coffee klatsch on Friday mornings in the Grille, and as an avid reader, says the library on campus is very nice. He’d like to get more involved in campus activities as he settles in, noting, “People have been so welcoming.”

When their children visit, they’re impressed with the amenities. “It’s a delightful place to live,” Bruce says. “They take care of everything.”

We're already looking forward to Octofair!

Talking about fall celebrations might seem a bit early, since we’re still waiting for spring, but calendars fill up fast.

The committees are already planning for Octofair, which features food, activities for kids, raffles, handmade items made by residents in the woodshop, a silent auction, and more. This year's event is slated for Saturday, October 18th.

Organizers will be collecting items for the silent auction in the coming months. If you are working on rightsizing and need to find a home for any artwork, jewelry, furniture, antiques, or other items, the committee would be happy to hear from you. Proceeds benefit the Residents Association.

Planning for our future

If you visit campus this summer you may see construction crews, as our Secretariat Plan to maintain, reimagine, and modernize campus gets underway.

For starters, to ensure we maintain our resources, we engaged the asset management consulting firm zumBrunnen to carefully review all parts of our campus to determine property and facilities needs for the next 20 years. The result is a detailed, long-term plan that will enable us to thoughtfully address these needs.

Beyond that, though, we are also launching upgrades to reimagine our campus. A committee of residents, board members, and our leadership team toured campus and evaluated areas for improvement, including modernizing the kitchen, renovating the auditorium, and upgrading the covered entrance and some of our Healthcare spaces.

As we address these priority enhancements, we’ll continue to work on the details of longer-range plans for new construction, and begin the necessary review and approval processes.

After a careful review, we have made our choice for an architect to help us put these plans into action. The consensus is that Spiezle, a company with long experience working on White Horse Village projects, is an excellent match.

Residents here think highly of our beautiful campus and amenities, and our priority is to continue to improve to ensure existing residents enjoy an unparalleled senior living experience while we prepare for the needs of future generations.

Around campus

Here’s a look back at some of the recent happenings at White Horse Village. For more photos and updates, be sure to like and follow our Facebook page.

Two years ago, residents gathered to celebrate the Eagles in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs, only to see Philly come up short. This year, to the delight of the crowd in the Auditorium, the Eagles left no chance for a comeback, smothering Mahomes and the Chiefs 40-22 in one of the more mismatched Super Bowls in recent memory. A delicious buffet complemented the on-field domination.

Festive klezmer music evolved from eastern European Jewish traditions, and the Ken Ulansey Klezmer Ensemble delivered a terrific rendition with a jazz influence at their performance here on January 25th.

We also enjoyed an entertaining St. Patrick's Day preview in February with a visit from the Galway Girls trio, who performed traditional and modern Irish harmonies.

Flowers and chocolate are fine, but how about a dance party on Valentine's Day? We enjoyed desserts, a DJ, and moving to the music!
