'Everything we wanted' in a community

When White Horse Village hosts the Senior Living Showcase in May, real estate agent Saundra Shepard plans to be there representing Berkshire Hathaway. It will be a short drive—she and her husband Geoff live in our community. Saundra is able to share with visitors not only about real estate, but the life the Shepards have built together at White Horse Village.

When looking ahead to the future, the couple knew they wanted to find a Continuing Care Retirement Community, where they would be guaranteed care for life without a change in rates if their health changed.

“We absolutely love it here,” Saundra adds. “It gave both of us the flexibility we were looking for to both continue what we love to do with work, and also be part of such a vibrant, interactive community that lends itself to a lot of different lifestyles.”

Highlights have included simple routines, like the anticipation of dinner together with friends in the evening. Geoff notes that dinner is a great time to learn about the fascinating backgrounds of other residents. “There’s plenty to explore and talk about.”

If you’re thinking of looking into a community for yourself, don’t wait too long, the couple advises. Come when you’re young enough to participate in everything, and start planning even in your 60s.

“White Horse Village was everything we had hoped to find,” Saundra says, “but thank goodness we got on the waiting list, and then we were in control, basically, of when we wanted to come.”

A tip of the cap from Philadelphia Magazine

We're very honored to be named a Top Senior Living Community by Philadelphia Magazine for the second straight year! To create its listings, the magazine researches factors like government ratings, inspections, and community perception.

“Being named to this prestigious list is a real honor,” says President & CEO Michael Shaw. “It lets the broader community in on what we already know: That the dedicated team members and welcoming residents here work together to create a wonderful place to live.”

In the news

Our expanding therapy services were recently highlighted nationally in McKnight's Senior Living, showcasing how we have brought these services in-house rather than relying on an outside vendor. President & CEO Michael Shaw told the publication that by offering therapy within our organization, “White Horse Village can deliver more effective and efficient care while reducing the challenges of transportation and scheduling.”

An important test for Healthcare

We’re thrilled about the recent inspection of our Canterbury Skilled Nursing neighborhood! Like all healthcare organizations in Pennsylvania, we regularly undergo inspections to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. This year, the unannounced survey reported zero deficiencies, which is a major accomplishment, demonstrating levels of compliance that even high-quality healthcare organizations don’t always reach.

Inspectors observe interactions between the team and residents, evaluate care, review records, and assess safety and comfort, evaluating quality of care and quality of life.

“This result is a testament to our team’s dedication and compassion,” says President & CEO Michael Shaw. “Congratulations to the Canterbury team!”

Social services team offers expert support

One of the greatest advantages of living at White Horse Village is the support in navigating healthcare options, so they are less complicated and confusing!

The social services team is an important part of that support. They work as part of a broader team across the full continuum of care (known here as Aging with Choices).

Social workers meet with residents to understand their emotional and practical needs and connect them with resources. They help during life changes, health events, or moves within the community. They explain options, coordinate care, and arrange services. And they listen to concerns and serve as advocates.

Meet the team!

Around campus

Here’s a look back at some of the recent happenings at White Horse Village. For more photos and updates, be sure to like and follow our Facebook page. We’re also now on Instagram! Follow us @whitehorsevillagepa.

We celebrated the beginning of a new baseball season—and the Phillies’ 5-3 win over the Rangers in their home opener.

Workshops by various artists allow participants to try their hand at new skills, such as solar dyeing (a sun-activated process) and stained glass.

We learned about shibori, a traditional Japanese method for dyeing fabric with indigo patterns, from Sue Fix Mitrano of Blue Fox Studio. Sue will return to lead a shibori dye workshop.

Concerts are scheduled regularly throughout this year. Some we’ve enjoyed so far: David Kim, a Juilliard graduate who began playing violin at age 3; International pianist Claire Huangci, who wowed us with renditions of Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and more; and Frank Sinatra himself (well, performer Richard DeSimone, whose act was eerily spot on). Benchmark Construction generously helped make the Claire Huangci concert possible!

French chocolate sommelier Estelle Tracey, who now lives in the area, walked us through some of the fascinating history of this treat, and more importantly, provided samples. Thanks to our home care partner Bayada for sponsoring!

A Seder-themed dinner led by a local rabbi offered a fresh perspective on the Passover and its meaning.

In April, the Volunteer and Activities Fair provided an introduction to all the ways to make an impact in our community. Later in the month, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon celebrated the thousands of hours of contributions to community life!

Thanks to the Edgmont Historical Society for a fascinating lecture on the geology of the area and how this township changed with settlement over the years. Resident Martha Ryan is a member of the society’s board.
