White Horse Village is a fan favorite!

The Best of the Main Line awards, published by Main Line Today magazine, celebrate the finest establishments and services in the region. This year, White Horse Village won Best Senior Community of the Main Line! This honor reflects the quality of our vibrant community here, and the team’s exceptional dedication and commitment to providing outstanding service.

A new chapter and a new home

After Monsignor Ralph Chieffo, often known simply as Father Chieffo, wrapped up his 50 years of service with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, he moved into a new home: A one-bedroom apartment at White Horse Village.

This location was close to family members, and he also appreciated the overall quality and the kindness and compassion of team members here.

Wherever he goes, he tries to care for people, he says—and allow people to care for him. He feels that spirit here in the welcoming atmosphere, and has already connected with fellow residents, some of whom are former parishioners. He lives on his own in his apartment, but has plenty of friends to spend time with.

When he can use a hand, the team has been quick to respond. “I feel very safe here,” he says.

“The facilities here are excellent,” Father Chieffo says. He appreciates the pool and the Wellness Center, and also, of course, the food. “There’s always plenty of desserts,” he says, showing his dry sense of humor.

He used to have a condo at the New Jersey shore, and his apartment home, with plenty of room and a beautiful deck, has a similar feel. “I feel just like I’m on vacation,” he says.

Team member spotlight:

Don Martin has seen it all on campus

When Don Martin first started working in this community in 1989, it was more of a construction site than a village. Residents had yet to move in. There was still no healthcare facility, the Clubhouse was still under construction, and the sales office consisted of a trailer.

Thirty-five years later, Don is still here, one of multiple team members who have served with dedication in the community for decades.

Don was working two part-time jobs when he took the carpenter position at what was fast becoming White Horse Village.

In his new position, Don worked with others on the crew out of a makeshift office in an unfinished Garden Cottage. He saw the campus grow and expand as the “original settlers” moved in.

After 11 years, Don thought he was moving on. He got an opportunity to work for a local school district, which he accepted. He was supposed to stay for a couple of months and train his replacement, though.

That replacement is long gone, but “I’m still here,” Don says. “I’ve been doing part-time now for almost 25 years.”

New flowerbeds are a

preview of things to come

This spring, a patch of reseeded earth along Manor Drive sprouted not grass, but a colorful patch of wildflowers.

The idea, says E.G. Rall Jr., who runs the company that has handled White Horse Village’s landscaping needs for more than 30 years, is to experiment with a micro-meadow that incorporates native flowers and benefits pollinators. This goes hand in hand with our mission of building a sustainable community that is thoughtful about how it impacts the environment.

“It’s been a success so far,” E.G. says. “The residents have loved it.”

Rall has been consulting with the Landscaping committee about more places on campus to plant these wildflower meadows, so keep an eye out for more of these blooms.

The resident landscaping committee helped develop other flower beds this summer, including one featuring perennials like scarlet beebalm, black-eyed Susan, and giant hyssop, in a sunny and visible spot near the bocce court. The idea, says Ann Hunter, head of the committee, is to benefit pollinators while also rolling out a flower show that will bloom from June to September.

Native plants offer insects ideal homes, and the committee is emphasizing this beneficial habitat.

“We are really striving to plant native on the White Horse Village campus,” Ann says.

Come visit us!

It’s been a busy year with lots of events on campus, including multiple Taste & Tour events, a farm-to-table culinary experience, and a senior living showcase.

Now is a great time to come by, as a limited number of newly renovated one-bedroom homes are available, offering comfort, convenience and community. You’ll find contemporary finishes and modern kitchens, and many have private outdoor spaces.

Funding their futures

Congratulations to the 26 team members who recently received scholarships to support their education! The White Horse Village Foundation awarded more than $43,000 in total.

Generous residents are the primary supporters of the foundation and its scholarship fund, which since 1997 has awarded team members nearly $600,000 in assistance for higher education to further their career aspirations.

Board adds more veteran leaders

This summer, the White Horse Village Board of Directors saw a passing of the torch, as longtime board member Michael Hammond took on the role of chair from Pamela Hansen. We’re so grateful for all Pamela’s service and wise counsel in this role, and excited for what’s next under Michael’s guidance.

We were also excited to welcome three new board members this summer: Cathy Mikus (healthcare law), Cheryl Kiley (employee benefits), and Anthony J. Buividas (healthcare executive consulting).

Around campus

Here’s a review of some of the summer happenings at White Horse Village. For more photos and updates, be sure to like and follow our Facebook page.

Wherever it takes place, the Alzheimer’s Walk is a party. This year the hot weather in June shifted most of the event inside, but the music and dancing continued as usual, and the event raised about $32,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware County!

As part of the walk, the Ducky Derby raised more than $400 in its second year! Three races yielded three champions. Congrats to the winning duck trainers: Terri McCabe, Ellen Monsees, and Mary Last!

We had another successful Garden Day this year, with 60 visitors attending to admire the flowers and enjoy lunch!

Lisa Griffith, a longtime international opera singer, returned this summer to grace us with her music. She was accompanied on the piano by talented resident Ray Orzechowski. Together, they performed a number of toe-tapping favorites from the American Songbook.

And around the Fourth of July holiday, we also enjoyed a performance of patriotic tunes by the Timberdale Brass.

We had lots of good music this summer! We were also treated to a concert by classical pianist Pianist YunJung Park.

In July, the Dining team helped celebrate the high school graduates on our team, hosting a delicious dinner for family and friends.
