Oakwood Latino Adventist Church Welcomes New and Returning Latino Students

January 8, 2022, was a remarkable Sabbath at Oakwood University! New and returning students, parents, families, friends, and Latino members of the Huntsville community gathered at the Moseley Complex to welcome our new Latino students at Oakwood.
During the welcome, Dr. Pollard delivered a powerful speech in Spanish that assured everyone that there is no place for the Latino community better than Oakwood University.

What began as the Hispanic ministry on campus, Oakwood Latino Association, is now an official church of the South Central Conference (SCC): the Oakwood Latino Adventist (OLA) Church. Elder Dorian Melo, assistant ministerial director of SCC, Enoc Balbuena, locally hired pastor of the OLA Church, Dr. Manuel Moral, professor in the School of Religion at Oakwood and president of the OLA Board, and Elder Isaac Ibarra, special assistant to the president of Oakwood for Diversity and Inclusion and cofounder of OLA, are working together side-by-side with Oakwood University's President, Dr. Leslie Pollard. |

Elder Benjamin Jones, president of SCC, wants to make sure that the newly-established church (OLA) becomes what Dr. Pollard expressed in his remarks, “a cultural oasis.”
The celebration concluded with a delicious banquet at the Bradford-Cleveland-Brooks Leadership Center at Oakwood University.

'Tis the Season of Giving

As the world adjusts to our “new norm” of living through an ever-changing pandemic, where COVID-19 omicron variant cases continue to surge, food and job insecurities are simultaneously impacting our communities daily. Traveling with families has become more challenging, yet Oakwood University remains diligent in its efforts to support its local community, serving those in need.
Oakwood University is aware that many college-age students are among those who are affected by food insecurity. Even among our own student population, many Oakwood students residing both on and off campus are unable to purchase adequate or healthy groceries for themselves.

Due to travel restrictions or the high cost of travel, many students did not go home during the Christmas/New Year break. A fraction of the student population includes those full-time students residing locally who would not be travelling over the break. In collaboration with the Office of Student Life & Mission, Residential Life, and the Food Bank of North Alabama, the Community Health Action Center (CHAC) Food Pantry in conjunction with Healthy Campus, Healthy Community, prepared and distributed 90 bags of fresh produce and non-perishable food items to college students in need during the holiday season. |

Each holiday bag was overflowing with a two-week supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, and non-perishable food items such as canned and dry goods. On December 15, 2021, the CHAC Food Pantry Van made a stop at the West Oaks Student Housing complex where, with the assistance of Dean Camille Kibler, holiday food bags were handed out to appreciative students who reside both on and off campus.
With delight and surprise the students embraced the gifts of love they received and were grateful for the support given. Oakwood University is not only an institution of higher education and robust learning, we also pride ourselves in being an institution of service.

WJOU Welcomes New Host for "Sunset to Sunset" |
|
WJOU welcomes Dr. Christopher C. Thompson as the new host of the weekly program "Sunset to Sunset."
Dr. Thompson is an alumnus of Oakwood University, an author, father, pastor,
community activist, communicator and a lover of people and Jesus.
"Sunset to Sunset" started as a program called "Precious Moments," with host Rodney Valentine. Mrs. Ivy Starks began serving as host in 1995 and the name of the program was changed to "Sunset to Sunset." In 2011, Anthonye Perkins produced the program from week to week. Beginning January 14, 2022, Dr. Thompson will begin as the host of the program that has opened and closed the Sabbath in homes across the globe for well over 25 years. Thompson is humbled to serve the WJOU family.
Tune in to WJOU Praise 90.1 FM on Friday and Saturday at sunset (Central Standard Time) weekly.

Milton Blackmon, Ed.D., has been named Lead Academic Dean and Senior Associate Dean in the undergraduate college at Duke University. In addition to working with students, he will be supervising several Academic Deans. He is the first African American to hold this position. Dr. Blackmon has been at Duke University for 24 years, and has also been a volunteer Chaplain at Duke University Hospital for over 20 years.
Prior to going to Duke University, Dr. Blackmon was an Academic Advisor for eleven years at the University of Akron in Ohio. Prior to that he taught for a few years in Seventh-day Adventist schools including teaching two years at the SDA college in Japan.
Dr. Blackmon enjoys being involved in the community. He is a former Vice President of the Durham Branch of the NAACP. He was appointed and reappointed by two former North Carolina Governors to serve on the Governor’s Council for Sickle Cell Disease. Dr. Blackmon was elected to serve for two years as Vice Chair of the Council. He had two sons with sickle cell disease, who both passed away unexpectedly from complications to the disease as young adults. He is a firm believer in Romans 8:28.
Dr. Blackmon’s motto for life is taken from Education, page 297, “To honor Christ, to become like Him, to work for Him, is life’s highest ambition and its greatest joy.”

It’s the 125th year celebration of Oakwood’s existence and our Reunion Honor Classes – the 2s and the 7s -- are NEXT UP to CELEBRATE!
These 13 AMAZING and MEMORABLE CLASSES will help us celebrate and engage in a BIG way, as they organize their financial gifts to ‘the Oaks’ during their reunion year, and plan to join us in person for Alumni Homecoming, April 13-17, 2022.
Last year, our Reunion Honor Classes (the 1s and the 6s) gave over $140,000 by Homecoming. Will the classes of the 2s and the 7s outdo the last year’s Honor Classes? We will see. The Reunion Year GIVING CLOCK started the day after Homecoming 2021 - April 5, 2021. Exciting!!!
