TSU Celebrates Black History Month |
|
Texas Southern University officially kicks off Black History Month on Wednesday, February 1, with a comprehensive calendar of events highlighting the excellence of African Americans and featuring events produced and hosted by students, faculty, and staff.
A spotlight will be placed on Black history in the city of Houston and on the campus of Texas Southern University. Profiles on Black history makers, "Soaring for TSU," will be shared on the university's official social media platforms.

The Division of Enrollment & Student Success/Corporate-Community Partnerships & Career Pathways is also highlight history makers in corporate America with "Colors of Corporate Success."
The first profile was President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young.

The Black History Month Convocation, which the University initiated in 2022, will take place Wednesday, February 8 in Sawyer Auditorium at 11:45 a.m. and is open to the public.
Other events include the inaugural TSU TALK lecture series organized by the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College. This kickoff event will feature a discussion with TSU School of Communication Interim Dean Dr. Christian Ulasi: "The Enduring Role of Media in a Democratic Society.” It takes place on February 15 at 6 p.m. in the School of Public Affairs.

Texas Southern University named to NBCU News Group’s NBCU Academy |
|
Texas Southern University has been named to the NBCU News Group’s NBCU Academy, joining 14 other colleges and universities as new academic partners.
“Journalists who trained at Texas Southern University are leading the industry in markets all across the nation as multimedia content creators,” said TSU School of Communication Interim Dean Dr. Christian Ulasi. “As we continue that important work, and as journalists continue to play an integral role in our society, we are proud to join with the team of world-class journalists at NBCU to provide an even higher level of instruction and hands-on training to our students.”
On the heels of NBCU Academy’s second anniversary, Cesar Conde, NBCUniversal News Group Chairman, announced today that NBCU Academy had increased its membership by 50 percent, with 15 new schools joining the 30 colleges and universities that have been part of the award-winning program. Since its inception in 2021, NBCU Academy partners have received funding, resources, training and development — in addition to access to the News Group’s world-class journalists.

President Young Delivers State of the University Address During Faculty Staff Institute |
|
President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young kicked off the spring semester with the State of the University address during the Spring Faculty Staff Institute.
She outlined the University's many accomplishments of 2022. Among those accomplishments are:

- Exceeded all 2022 Board targets for enrollment, freshman housing, and career placement
- Created the first College of Transdisciplinary Studies with 12 new degree programs.
- Creation of the Center for Transformative Health with the City of Houston
- Implemented innovative initiatives to enhance student retention and matriculation
- Submitted Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) for $986,310,898
- Significant increase in research external funding and scholarly initiatives
- NASA HBCU/MSI Technology Infusion Road Tour
- Established Recruitment Center in Arlington, Tx.
- Launched #TSU95 and the TSU95 Giving Circle, which has nearly 400 members
- SWAC Academic Success Award
- Launched new software to drastically reduce student financial aid process

TSU Breaks Ground on new Athletics Strength and Conditioning Facility |
|
Texas Southern
University and the
Department of
Athletics held a
groundbreaking ceremony for the
new Athletic Strength
and Conditioning
Facility this month.
The groundbreaking featured President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young, TSU Board of Regents members, Vice President of Intercollegiate
Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger, TSU athletic staff and the Ocean of Soul Marching Band.
The 6,600-square foot multimillion dollar facility will be built on the former basketball court directly behind the current TSU Football Field House which is located near Alexander Durley Stadium. The facility will include new weights, offices for strength and conditioning staff, space for physical therapy, an area for students to receive counseling services and more.
"This is a game-changer for us," said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. "The first thing today's society and student-athletes look at are facilities. We want to provide today's student-athletes and the ones in the future with first-class facilities when they attend Texas Southern. This will allow us to move the program forward and make an impact. I want to thank our Board of Regents and President Dr. Lesia L. Crumpton-Young for providing the resources to help execute our vision as this is the first step of what's to come down the line for TSU."

TSU signs agreement with world-renowned Brookhaven National Laboratory to advance research and innovation |
|
Texas Southern University and Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA)—which manages Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy—have signed an agreement to advance research and innovation in the field of science, technology, and engineering research.
“Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the leading research institutions in America,” said TSU vice president for research and innovation Dr. Michelle Penn-Marshall. “We are excited about the opportunity to establish collaborations between TSU and BNL, which will lead to innovative and transformative research projects that will benefit both institutions and the world. Texas Southern University is committed to being an excellent partner, while providing the best opportunities for our students to learn and prepare for the careers of tomorrow and our faculty to have access to state-of-the-art research facilities.”

Dr. Needha Boutte-Queen named Acting Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs |
|
Dr. Needha Boutté-Queen is now serving as Acting Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Boutté-Queen is a graduate of Texas Southern University, having received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. She credits her undergraduate education at TSU with preparing her for graduate studies at the University of Chicago and the University of Houston, where she completed the Masters’ and Doctorate degrees respectively. Dr. Boutté-Queen returned to TSU in 2006 to serve as Social Work Department Chair and stayed in that capacity until 2018 when she assumed the role of Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences (COLABS), which became a permanent role in 2019 following a national search. During her time as Chair and Dean, grant activities increased greatly within the College as did national awareness of several COLABS areas, including Music, Art, and Social Work.

Texas Southern University’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business (JHJ) on-campus MBA program has been named in The Princeton Review’s 2023 Best Business School Rankings.
“We are excited to be recognized by The Princeton Review for our stellar on-campus MBA Program,” said David Yen, dean of Jesse H. Jones School of Business. “This recognition is a testament to the transformative and collaborative work done daily by our faculty, staff, students, and alumni.”
The rankings for 2023 are based on surveys in 2021-22 of administrators at 397 business schools offering on-campus and/or online MBAs, and surveys of 29,900 students enrolled in the schools over the past three academic years.

Mr. TSU Taylor Getwood Crowned 19th Mister HBCU |
|
Mr. Texas Southern University, Taylor Getwood, now holds a new title: the 19th Mister HBCU.
He beat out 21 other HBCU kings at the Mister HBCU Kings’ Leadership Conference and Competition on January 28 in St. Louis, Missouri to become the first Mr. TSU to win the coveted title.
"To God Be The Glory,” Getwood said. “As I give all glory and praise to God and embark on this journey as ‘Mister HBCU,’ I want each of my fellow Tigers to remember that we all have a purpose in life. Walk unapologetically in your purpose, be authentically you, and step up to fulfill your purpose. We are each worthy of the crown that we bear, wear it with pride!"
The Mister HBCU Kings’ Leadership Conference and Competition was created to support, honor, and strengthen the role of HBCU campus Kings. The mission is to enhance the leadership skills of males attending HBCUs by creating an infrastructure for leadership that enables them to develop as spokespersons, role models and leaders in their respective universities and communities, while participating in competition to serve as the reigning Mister HBCU.

Graduate School Alum Named one of Wisconsin's 52 Most Influential Leaders |
|
Texas Southern University salutes alumnus Randall Newsome. The Fort Worth native graduated Cum Laude from TSU’s School of Communication in 2012 with a degree in Mass Communication. His specialty was Broadcast Journalism.
Newsome attended TSU on an academic scholarship – and he was a Freeman Scholar in the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College. He was a member of the TSU football team – the 2010 SWAC Champion TSU football team! He also became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Incorporated.
He’s been keeping people informed since his days at TSU writing for the TSU Herald. After graduating, Newsome worked as news reporter at in Monroe, Louisiana. From there, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he was a Lifestyle Host, Anchor, and reporter. His journey took him to Baltimore this year where he now anchors the morning news for WMAR-TV – the ABC affiliate in the nation’s 28th largest media market.
Newsome says TSU taught him the pride of what it means to be a product of an HBCU – Understanding that we were meant to overcome any adversity, whether it was in school or down the line in your career. He says it also taught him how to stand out and make excellence the standard in his life in anything that he does. Newsome says he found his voice and love for storytelling here – giving special credit to his journalism mama – Professor Serbino Sandifer-Walker.

TSU Basketball Set to Host Florida Schools |
|
The TSU men's and women's basketball teams are gearing up to host the two Florida SWAC schools in back-to-back home games.
On Saturday, Feb. 4 Florida A&M comes to H&PE Arena. The women's game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. During this Alumni Night game former Tiger basketball players will be honored. There will also be a special performance by Sensations alumnae, and the legendary Houston R&B group H-Town.
Monday, Feb. 6 the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats come to H&PE. This will be Greek Night. Discounted tickets are available at the box office for anyone wearing their Greek paraphernalia. There will be a greek stroll-off. TSU will also welcome special guests: alumnus and Houston civil rights advocate Bishop James Dixon and the Community of Faith Church, and the NAACP Houston Branch.

Tickets are on sale for the inaugural HBCU Classic, hosted by the Astros Foundation. This round-robin collegiate baseball tournament will highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their baseball programs on opening weekend of college baseball, Feb. 17-19, 2023.
The Cactus Jack Foundation is the title sponsor of the event.
The Cactus Jack HBCU Classic will be held at Minute Maid Park and will be a highlight of Division I college baseball's 2023 opening weekend. The six schools participating in the inaugural event include Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas), Prairie View A&M (Prairie View, Texas), Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge, La.), Grambling State University (Grambling, La.), Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss.), Mississippi Valley State University (Itta Bena, Miss.).
TSU will play Mississippi Valley State University on Feb. 17 at 3 p.m., Prairie View A&M on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m., and Southern University on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
The Cactus Jack HBCU Classic week includes a variety of events, highlighted by a college fair featuring over 100 colleges and universities hosted by the Astros Youth Academy at Minute Maid Park.

Women's Track and Field Mile Relay Team Wins Houston Invitational |
|
The Texas Southern women's track & field team had a strong weekend on the track led by the mile relay team winning the Houston Invitational Title on Friday.
The mile relay team featuring Rayah Wynn, Madison Dominguez, Tardranique London and Shelby Brooks won the title with a time of 3:50.84. As a result, the team now has the second-fastest time in the SWAC.
Brooks, the reigning SWAC Runner of the Week, placed second in the 400 (56.75) while Madison Dominguez placed seventh (57.79) in the same event followed by Rayah Wynn's 10th-place finish (58.62). Brooks also placed 10th in the 200 in a time of 25.07.

Clyde Duncan Sr. Inducted Into Texas Track & Field Coaches Association’s 2023 Hall of Fame Class
|
|
Texas Southern head men's track & field coach Clyde Duncan, Sr. was recently inducted into the Track & Field Coaches Association's 2023 Hall of Fame Class.
Duncan was a member of the association's 14th annual class and was officially inducted on Jan. 6 in Wylie, Texas. He was one of seven members inducted into the prestigious group.
Duncan has been associated with Texas Southern for over 50-plus years as a head coach, student-athlete, supporter and instructor.
