Be Questioning.
I was going up to Burlington, Vermont with my friend Tami. It was 1992 in the fall. We were on Interstate 93 in the middle of the state at a rest stop. A gal came in and asked a question. “How far to Portland, Maine? I’m driving up from Boston.” We told her she got on the wrong interstate - she should be on 95 and she was on 93. She didn’t question enough in the beginning of the route and consequently, her journey was a lot tougher than it should have been.
How often in life do we find ourselves a lot farther from our destination or goal because we didn’t ask enough questions? I’ve always been a map reader … a connoisseur, if you will … because I hate being lost. I read recipes over and over. I am the person instructions are made for. I will follow YouTube videos on how to fix something … because if I don’t, I will end up lost, with bad food, a bunch of screws leftover, and/or injured. If you question - does that mean you have to follow the instructions 100%? Nope, but it will give you a good base of “tried and true” and something to build on.
FYI, ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance will lead you down the wrong path, and you end up somewhere in Canada. But if you are questioning, and you are always in the “curious” mode - ready to grow, wander, expand, and explore … you’ll find yourself on a blissful path to a well-thought-out destination.

Clarion Clinic Updates
Changes have been made to the registration area at the Clarion Clinic. Two registration desks now face the waiting room while one desk remains facing south.
In addition, a temporary wall has been added where the previous outreach clinic was located. This is to accommodate the LDRP room additions for OB.

Coding Corner
No Documentation, No Reimbursement
Healthcare reimbursement is reflective of what is documented, not just what was performed. It is important that we are reimbursed for our services; and in order to get properly reimbursed for the care we give a patient, documentation is crucial. In the eyes of the payers, if it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.
As our favorite coding saying goes, “Not documented, not done!”

Have you ever questioned your ability to try something new, take on a new challenge at work, try your hand at a new activity or hobby at home, or just take a risk? When we doubt our abilities, it's often because we don't want to make any room for mistakes. But what we sometimes fail to remember or allow grace for is that mistakes are also how we learn, and they can lead to our growth. We can mitigate self-doubt and fear of failure by practicing being kind to ourselves, no matter the outcome. Allow yourself to be inventive and creative. You might fail or you might really succeed. Maybe you'll learn how to do it better the next time.
Toll House Inn was famous among guests for its desserts. The owner, Ruth Graves Wakefield, was a dietitian who liked to prepare all the food. One day, she was making cookies and noticed that she was out of baker’s chocolate. Graves chopped up a bar of Nestlé chocolate and was disappointed when she noticed that the pieces didn’t melt and blend with the dough. And that was how the chocolate chip cookie came to life...
Think about all the creativity and new ideas that could stem from questioning new alternatives and ideas? If Graves didn't question how she could still create a chocolate cookie, then the chocolate chip cookie may never have been created.

April is Workplace Violence Awareness Month:
A Month for Awareness and Recognition
The month of April is used to raise awareness around workplace violence prevention, and none are more acutely affected by violence in the workplace than those who work in healthcare. Healthcare workers are more affected by violence than any other profession.
With this in mind, we wanted to take time this month to remind all staff that Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics has a zero-tolerance policy for workplace violence. The safety and security of all staff are of the utmost importance, and that is why we continue to work on mitigation and prevention strategies. This month you will see the rollout of the “Stop Workplace Violence” poster campaign. The first poster will be in staff areas to bring awareness to our zero tolerance for workplace violence and empower staff to understand what workplace violence is and what to do about it. While this is a small step, when added to the other tools we have in place, such as the Response Team, AVADE training and RL6 reporting, we create a culture of safety.
Safety is a team effort; it requires vigilance and a commitment by each of us that when we see something, we will say something.

We have all encountered that person who asks a million questions at conferences or webinars. For some it can be super annoying as it seems to drag the session out longer, and for some it can be super helpful as they are too afraid to ask the questions but appreciate the answers. This week’s theme is be questioning and my first thought was the annoyance of a million questions as patience is one of my biggest opportunities. But after reflection, it makes me really stop and think questioning to understand the why instead of making assumptions. Often, we take in information and process it with our own spin based on what we believe the motivation is for the information. In reality, we should all ask more questions to better understand the information that we are given, especially the why behind decisions.
My challenge for you this week is to be more questioning in your life. Whether that be at work or at home, when you catch yourself making an assumption ask more questions. It will help give you additional perspective and better understanding as to the decision being made. My example for this week relates to my search for a different car. It has been a long and ridiculous process that I stubbornly have done on my own. Rick asked me the other night why I was leaning towards one vehicle over the other one. What specifically set it apart or made it my pick? It made me stop and actually share with him my decision-making thought process to which he agreed made perfect sense. However, before sharing those details, it didn’t seem like a logical choice. So, practice being questioning and see what facts you can gather.
