ScrapDogs Community Compost Expands Service to Gardiner
ScrapDogs Community Compost, a Maine-grown composting company based out of Rockland, has expanded its service area to the Gardiner area. Residents and businesses of Gardiner, Farmingdale, and Randolph officially have access to curbside food waste collection by ScrapDogs.
ScrapDogs was founded in 2018 with the goal of reducing food waste sent to landfills and incinerators, and promoting a healthy local food system. Over 40% of all waste disposed of in Maine could be composted instead, reducing not only carbon and methane emissions, but often costs and logistical challenges as well. The organization offers food waste collection services to residents, restaurants, schools, and other food waste-producing organizations, then processes the collected food waste into finished compost to return to customers and community members.
Residents and businesses in these areas have the opportunity to subscribe to the service in order to dispose of their food waste, including fruit and veggie scraps, meat and dairy products, coffee filters, and more. Subscribers are then entitled to receive finished compost back to use in their gardens or donate to local organizations. To learn more and to sign up, visit www.scrapdogscompost.com.
| | Daffodils are in full bloom at the First Amendment Museum | | |
The bright and cheery daffodil symbolizes more than the start of spring -- in the early 20th century, Maine women suffragists adopted the daffodil as a symbol of their dedication to the movement and to women's right to vote.
Participants of the movement -- led by the First Amendment Museum's very own Anne Gannett -- brought bouquets of daffodils to lobby legislators, handed them out at rallies, and asked supporters to wear them on their lapels.
Caught in between his Suffragette wife Anne and an Anti-Suffragist mother, Guy P. Gannett, who was a member of the Maine Legislature at the time, famously wore a rose (a symbol of the anti-suffrage movement) on one lapel and a daffodil on the other while casting his vote for women's suffrage.
This floral emblem is proudly blossoming at the First Amendment Museum!
