| | United Way of Kennebec Valley is celebrating 70 years of impact! | |
2025 is a big year for United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) — it marks 70 years of strengthening lives and building a more vibrant community. As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to help ensure this impact continues for generations to come.
A powerful way to secure this legacy is through planned giving. Including United Way in your will, retirement account or life insurance policy is a simple way to make a lasting impact. By joining our Legacy Society, you help secure the future of essential programs in Kennebec County. To learn more, visit uwkv.org/planned-giving.
If a planned gift isn’t the right fit for you at this time, you can still make a lasting difference as a Legacy Builder by making a one-time gift of $250 or more to our endowment. Your gift will help sustain vital programs for years to come, ensuring continued support for those who need it most.
As we celebrate 70 years of impact all year long, we’re also recognizing the incredible people who make this community stronger. We’re looking for nominations for 70 community heroes — tutors, coaches, public safety officers, volunteers and more — who have made a difference in Kennebec County. If you know someone who deserves recognition, submit your nomination at uwkv.org/70th-anniversary.
We’re also collecting impact stories from people whose lives have been touched by United Way’s work. If you or someone you know has been supported by UWKV, we’d love to hear your story and share it with our community. Our community heroes and impact stories will be featured on our website throughout the year.
Visit uwkv.org/70th-anniversary to submit a nomination or share your story.
Thank you for being part of our story. Together, we can build a future where everyone in Kennebec County has the opportunity to thrive.

| | SBA Small Business Person Award Winners: Carrie Gervais and Jennifer Cousins | |
Carrie Gervais and Jennifer Cousins have been named the SBA Small Business Person Award Winners for the state of Maine for 2025. Each year, the U.S. Small Business Administration celebrates National Small Business Week (May 4-10, 2025) by recognizing the achievements of outstanding small business owners and entrepreneurs across the United States. Carrie and Jen are extremely honored to be considered for such a prestigious accolade.
Stepping Stones Montessori School is a Montessori school for K-8 students based in Chelsea. Founded by Gervais and Cousins in 2001, the school opened with 8 Pre-K students. Over 24 years Stepping Stones has also expanded to include more than 90 PreK to Gr 8 students for local families. The school serves as a solution for those seeking a rigorous, child-centered education.
The SBA chose Stepping Stones Montessori School for their persistence in overcoming the immense financial and educational challenges of the Pandemic and to highlight the school’s response to childcare shortages and educational options in Maine. On May 5, Cousins and Gervais will travel to Washington, D.C. and be honored at the National Small Business Week award ceremony, along with winners from across the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
