Eating local
A series from the Williamsburg Library

This month, Williamsburg Regional Library is giving users a crash course in eating local. During this four week series, farmers, business owners, and other experts will share the benefits and challenges of growing, selling, and buying local food.

The Benefits of Eating Local
March 4, 2 p.m., Stryker Center
Michael and Amy Drewry of Drewry Farms will offer this opening lecture about the benefits of eating local to both your health and our local economy. Attendees will learn some of the food traditions of Southeastern Virginia from a multi-generational farming family and explore the heritage of many of our unique regional crops. The Drewrys will also discuss the challenges of farming and purchasing local foods and possible solutions to those challenges.

The Business of Eating "Lokal"
March 11, 2 p.m., Stryker Center
Eric Christenson is the chef and owner of Lokal, a cafe that serves up vegetarian and vegan cuisine featuring fresh local produce, right in the heart of downtown Williamsburg. He will discuss how his restaurant makes decisions to bring locally grown food to his patrons and offer insight into the business end of eating local.

Community Supported Agriculture
March 18, 2 p.m., Stryker Center
What is Community Supported Agriculture (often abbreviated as CSA)? This innovative system gives urban and suburban residents direct access to high quality local produce by allowing them to receive a regularly scheduled shipment of whatever is in season at the moment. Charlie Maloney, owner of Dayspring Farm, will explain the CSA model in greater detail and talk about how it plays a central part in sustainable farming.

Community Gardens
March 25, 2 p.m., James City County Library
You've learned all about the various ways farmers and restauranteurs get local food to your table -- but what if you want to try your hand at growing your own? It's very possible, even if you don't own a home with a sprawling yard. For our final talk, William & Mary professor Jessica Stephens will tell you how to get your own spot in one of Williamsburg's best community gardens.

"The benefits of eating locally are many," says local farmer Michael Drewry. "Whether you grow your own or purchase food from a local farmer, you are eating seasonal, high nutrient food that is healthier for you."
