GLOBAL BUSINESS
Even through managing the hurdles of combining virtual and in-person learning, the Global Business Insight Students have been pushed to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie and how they interact within a group, setting the stage for projects with real world clients they will be working on for the rest of the year. Already, the class has gone through two smaller projects, learning specifically about the stages of project management and the development of psychological safety in a group setting to encourage better collaboration, helping aid transition into these projects.

These business principles heavily interconnect with the economic and communication aspects of the class as well. Instead of focusing only on specific equations and graphs, the economics curriculum has been teaching students to connect these principles to fiscal issues going in businesses and governments internationally. The English portion of the course is also integrated greatly with the relationships students are building with their mentors.

Additionally, the virtual discussions with guest speakers have been very productive and a great way to get an inside perspective of those working in the workforce of how business principles apply to real jobs out there. The level of interest and amount of questions is something truly unparalleled to any other class at Pewaukee. This kind of learning will only continue to blossom as the year goes on.

ELEMENTS OF HEALTH AND MEDICINE

Students in the Elements of Health & Medicine strand have been working towards their Nursing Assistant Certification at WCTC. Students wrapped up the lecture and lab portion of the training with the month of October. They will finish the CNA program by Thanksgiving with their clinical rotations.

In our first case study in the Medical Interventions course, students used DNA sequencing to identify a case of bacterial meningitis on a college campus. They performed contact tracing and an ELISA test to diagnose other patients who are symptomatic. We were also able to apply our knowledge of disease outbreaks to study the current pandemic, treatment, and prevention. Then they learned about bacterial structure and function, how antibiotics are used to treat disease, and the increased prevalence of antibiotic resistance.

INNOVATIONS: BIOMEDICAL, BUSINESS & ENGINEERING

Innovations students had the exciting opportunity to engage in a mentor panel discussion on October 23. Veteran mentors Terry Frett and Jim Martinson offered great insights and pointers for students looking to maximize their mentorship experiences this year. Based on their advice, many students are setting out to read books with their mentors and seeking opportunities for new experiences like job shadows. New mentor and former PHS student Megan Murray expressed how beneficial and time-saving the mentorship experience could have been if she had the opportunity as a high schooler. Building on that, former PHS student Kyle Niebler shared thoughts about his positive experiences as a mentee in the Global Business program last year. Students overwhelmingly reported positive feedback about the panel and expressed the desire to have more experiences like this in the future. We appreciate the panel's time in supporting our students as they refine their post-secondary plans!

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT INTERNSHIP (TSI)
Our newest addition to Insight, our Technology Support Internship (TSI) combines hands-on application of IT skills with industry certifications. TSI students receive training from our IT department, and then run our technology help desk, assisting students and staff with troubleshooting issues on multiples kinds of devices throughout the district. Additionally, students are working towards earning critical industry certifications.

ADVANCED WRITING AND COMMUNICATIONS

INTRODUCING "THE CATCH"

The Hook team has been busy getting a variety of our publications up and running for the year!

Twice per month we publish The Catch, a video news program starring our Design Editor, Jake Koch. Below are our two October episodes featuring information about the youngest PHS athlete to make it to state, creative solutions different programs have had to make to operate through COVID-19, and a few guest appearances from PHS staff and students!

We’re also currently designing a new studio for The Catch in our new media center, which we moved into just this year. We’re hoping our November or December episodes will come to you from the new studio! Stay tuned for more!

PATHWAYS TO TEACHING
The students in Pathways to Teaching have been hard at work learning all different types of best practice and teaching strategies through classroom discussions, mentor meetings, guest speakers, and classroom observations.

A critical component of the Pathways to Teaching experience is the classroom observations. This year, changes needed to occur in order to ensure that all students remain safe. There are procedures in place for the Pathways students to follow prior to and during in-person observations in order to keep everyone healthy. The observations have been going very well, all of the students really enjoy them and gain so much knowledge. In addition, students have been able to observe intervention classes as well as how education is delivered in hybrid and virtual models!
