We annually survey businesses to gain a more in-depth understanding of how businesses are doing overall. Your opinions and feedback mean a lot to us and are shared directly with government.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Survey
Beyond the establishment of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation as a federal statutory holiday, many organizations undertook business-wide activities to engage their staff in learning opportunities on September 30.

The Board of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has dedicated significant resources for future years in order to assist the business community in accessing tools to help recognize this important day.
 
To ensure that we provide the resources that the business community needs, we want to know what your business did to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and what your business wants this day to look like in the future.

Community Benefits Report
The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce recently led a Task Force on Community Benefits procurement criteria, resulting in this report with several recommendations.

We met with the SaskBuilds and Procurement leadership team in mid-September to discuss our report and how to improve conditions for Saskatchewan businesses.

We plan to continue this conversation with officials and have sent an invitation to Minister Reiter.
Workers' Compensation Board Committee of Review
The Workers’ Compensation Act Committee of Review is seeking feedback on the Saskatchewan workers’ compensation system, including:

  • The Workers’ Compensation Act, 2013;
  • The Workers’ Compensation General Regulations, 1985;
  • The Workers’ Compensation Exclusion Regulations, 2014; and
  • How the Workers’ Compensation Board administers the Act and regulations.
BHER launches WIL Hub
Business + Higher Education Roundtable (BHER) recently announced the launch of "WIL Hub." We partnered with BHER in 2020 on consultations that helped inform this new project.

The WIL Hub responds to what business leaders and WIL (work-integrated learning) stakeholders across the country told them they needed.

It includes easy-to-use, evidence-based tools and resources to help employers explore, invest in, and create access to quality WIL. 
Vaccine Verification Rollout FAQs
The province’s proof of vaccine/negative test policy took effect on October 1.

The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce hosted an event with Ken Dueck, Executive Director of the province’s COVID-19 Business Response Team, where he walked through its impact on employers and business owners and answered questions.

We will dive into his career as a young entrepreneur and get insight on how to identify and leverage opportunities as well as navigate barriers on the way to success.
Why It Pays to Be Inclusive - An Employer Engagement Event
In conjunction with Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), SARC is hosting a free virtual employer engagement event on October 21 at 12:00 PM.

This event is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the benefits of hiring people experiencing disability and the benefits of an inclusive workforce. 
CONNECTED: Young Women Exploring Careers - Saskatoon Industry Education Council (SIEC)
SIEC's virtual "Connected" event on November 4 at 4:30 PM will empower and create connections between successful women and young females.

Throughout the evening, the students will interact with other female students and several “mentors” from our community as they hear the stories, career goals, and life lessons from the mentors and share their own future plans.
SREDA recognized with international award
The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) selected SREDA as one of its 2021 award winners! SREDA’s Saskatoon Economic Recovery Tracker (SERT) tool won an IEDC Digital Media award, which celebrates the innovative use of digital media technologies in economic development.

This marks the second time in SREDA’s history that it has been given a prestigious IEDC award.
Saskatoon’s Road Coffee Co. receives $10K award for resilience throughout pandemic
Road Coffee Co. was one of 10 businesses in Canada that received a $10,000 grant for their global efforts to improve the coffee industry.

The business gives low-interest loans to coffee farmers in order to help them buy supplies they need to improve their business and, therefore, make enough money to put food on the table.
Cameco and X-energy to Explore Collaboration to Support Xe-100 Small Modular Reactors
Cameco and X-energy have entered a non-binding and non-exclusive Memorandum of Understanding to explore possible areas of cooperation to support the potential future deployment, fuelling and servicing of Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Canada and the United States.
Protein Industries Canada and partners launch The Road to $25 Billion for Canada’s Plant-based Food, Feed and Ingredient Sector
Protein Industries Canada, in collaboration with several partners, launched a roadmap for Canada’s plant-based food, feed and ingredients sector. The roadmap outlines key actions to help the sector reach its goals of supplying the ingredients for 10 per cent of the global plant-based food products by 2035.

On September 24, the Globe and Mail named a number of Saskatchewan companies on their list of the 448 top growing companies in Canada.

Tech company launches in Saskatchewan through First Nation investment
A new IT firm officially launched in Saskatchewan on October 6 thanks to the investment of two Indigenous-owned companies. The Peter Ballantyne Group of Companies and Athabasca Basin Development have invested in Optek Solutions.

Optek Solutions is an IT company looking to provide technical support for all types of organizations.
FSIN, Sask. government announce SIGA as operator of new online gaming website
An amendment to the Gaming Framework Agreement was signed on September 23 between the government and The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) to create a legal framework for a new online gaming site.

The website will be operated by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) with the establishment of a revenue-sharing agreement between the FSIN and government.
Île-à-la-Crosse solar panels fuel community greenhouses
A new project in Île-à-la-Crosse is providing green power to a community school while powering young minds. 

Before leaping into summer holidays, students at Rossignol High School in Île-à-la-Crosse spent the end of their school year installing 120 state of the art, two-sided solar panels, adjacent to the school. The panels, provided by W Dusk Energy, a First Nations energy company from British Columbia, will offset the energy load to the school's greenhouse, which previously ran on propane.
