July 2026: INTERSUBJECTIVITY

Reflections from Tracy...

Embodied Presence: The Foundation of Therapeutic Change

One of our greatest clinical tools is the quiet ability to genuinely enter a child's experience while remembering that their experience is not our own. Interpersonal neurobiology calls this intersubjectivity – the shared relational space where two minds come to know one another while honoring each person's unique perspective.

To me, intersubjectivity is a relational skill, and, more deeply, it is an embodied way of being with another person. Children don’t come to us as a collection of sensory integrative processing patterns or developmental challenges. They arrive carrying a lifetime of experiences, each reflected in their nervous systems.

Relationship-based practice asks us to cultivate our own awareness of what a session or experience feels like from the child’s perspective. We must notice our assumptions, maintain our own regulation, and remain curious when we don't yet understand. When we become interested in how the child experiences the world, we create the conditions for something remarkable to happen: the relationship itself becomes therapeutic.

This is differentiation and linkage in action. We differentiate by recognizing that the child's inner world is beautifully distinct from our own. We create linkage through attunement, empathy, playfulness, shared joy, and authentic presence.

Within the SpIRiT© and the STEPPSI©, this way of thinking reminds us that our clinical reasoning extends beyond sensory integrative processing. We are continually asking ourselves how the child experiences the world, and how our own presence shapes those experiences.

The therapeutic relationship becomes a living laboratory where children experience safety, co-regulation, challenge, repair, discovery, and success. Through this process of possibility within development, children begin to both feel understood and to better understand themselves. Perhaps this is one of the most profound gifts of our profession.

Our work is about more than performance on goals. Our work is to help children experience themselves differently.

Trust in this essential work, and in those quiet moments of shared understanding that often become the foundation upon which lifelong development is built.

Warmly, and in reflection,

Tracy

This month in the Learning Journeys Community...

We will be gathering together this month for another live case processing, on July 30th at 2pm MT (find your time here). Reminder to all community members that you can watch the recording of our live sessions when it is posted the following week - and if you join now, you have access to an entire year’s worth of live forum recordings. This is a treasure trove of resources, and we are always adding more!

Upcoming Events...

In November 2026, CPD Retreats is hosting Tracy for a second time as she leads “A Spirited Retreat” - an immersive learning experience in Bali, Indonesia focused on the SpIRiT© model. Retreat participants will take the online SpIRiT course and then join together for a week of in-person, in-depth application of the tool in small groups. We are frequently asked for more opportunities to learn how to use the SpIRiT in practice, and this is an incredible opportunity to do just that! The retreat is appropriate for learners of all levels that are looking to deepen their practice, but spots are limited. Learn more here.

DFX Learning Journeys Opportunities:

A SpIRiT© cohort will be launching in Fall 2026. This is an opportunity to pace your learning with a group of colleagues and have live meetings with Tracy and the Learning Journeys team to consolidate learning. We’ll keep you posted here when we announce dates!

Self-paced versions of the SpIRiT© and STEPPSI© are always available to support your learning.

If you have a group that would like to set up a private cohort to work through either course, reach out to us at learningjourneys@developmentalfx.org!

Other Ways to Join Us:

  • Over three sessions across June, July, and September the Learning Journeys team, hosted by Diepistimoniko Kentro Ipeirou, is teaching “SIP Therapy That Fits: A Developmental Approach to Sensory Integrative Processing” - the June and July course days were so full of learning! More on this introductory level course offering coming soon.

  • In late June, Tracy taught “How Skill Emerges: Sensory Integrative Treatment for Praxis” in Wroclaw, Poland for Promyk Slonca.

  • In September you can catch Tracy at the 2026 PVI International Gathering - she will be presenting at the post-conference workshop day for clinicians about “Sensory Integrative Interventions: Portals to Possibility.”

  • ICDL’s 2026 International DIRFloortime® Conference is this October, live online - as part of the conference you can catch Tracy’s introduction to S-A-M (sensory-affect-motor). This is a great place to start if you haven’t yet taken the SpIRiT© course, as SAM is the foundation of this clinical reasoning tool!
