October 2026 – A Month of Learning, Shared With Our LJ Community

Reflections from Tracy...

October has arrived dressed in autumn's beauty, a season that gently invites us to pause and find a moment of awe. My birthday this month made that pause feel personal, and September gave me so much to reflect on:

  • A new hands-on course about sensory integrative processing (SIP) in Greece;
  • The Polyvagal Institute gathering in Sitges, Spain, where I shared a new sensory portals workshop; and
  • A keynote at the JFK Partners Autism Conference back home in Denver.

Across these events, one idea kept finding me that I'd love to explore together this month: having a capacity and being able to access it are not the same thing.

In Greece, the SIP course brought clinical reasoning to life. We explored how curious, careful observation of sensory modulation and discrimination can guide our understanding of a child’s participation and relevant intervention to support engagement. Careful observation reveals underlying capacities.

In Sitges, we gathered to focus on Polyvagal Theory, which highlights for us that state protection can limit access to these underlying capacities. Discernment and critical thinking are harder to reach when our internal systems are working to protect us from a threat, whether real or perceived, biological or social. In my sensory portals workshop, we traveled from exteroception through proprioceptive and vestibular experience toward interoception. It was a joy to watch sensation become a way to notice state, support co-regulation, and respond with care. Sensation offers a pathway back toward state awareness.

At JFK Partners, I gave a keynote, "The Science and Daily Expression of Sensory Integrative Processing in Autism: What Autistic Voices and Emerging Science Are Teaching Us," exploring the relationship between sensory processing and movement. The science grows richer, and our practice grows kinder, when we hold it alongside autistic people's lived experience. What a person shows us may not reveal everything they know, intend, or are working to organize. What we see on the surface rarely tells the whole story of what a person knows and intends.

For us as clinicians, these ideas integrate to gently shift the question from a black and white "Can they do it?" to an expansive "What is their nervous system doing right now? Which capacities are available, and what might support access?" That is clinical reasoning.

This process of deepening curiosity can extend beyond the therapy space. If we can offer one another the conditions for connection, the ripples will travel far. That’s what DFX Learning Journeys is for: gathering ideas, returning to them together, and carrying them into our practice and our relationships.

Reflect with us

What have you noticed recently that changed how you understand someone's access to participation or their capacity to adapt? I'd love to hear. Hit reply and tell me, or join the conversation in the Learning Journeys Community, where you can also find some additional content from this blog!

A Special Shout-out

I'm grateful to Kate Woodsome, journalist and founder of the Invisible Threads Lab, who wrote a wonderful dispatch about her time at the Polyvagal Gathering. She named what struck me most: the difference between having a capacity and being able to use it.

Warmly, and in reflection,

Tracy

This month in the Learning Journeys Community...

We will be gathering for a live discussion today, October 22nd, at 2pm MT (find your time here). All community members can watch the recording of our live sessions when it is posted the following week. That means if you join now, you’ll have access to over a year’s worth of live forum recordings!

New This Month: Spirited Chats

We are delighted to share that the Spirited Conversations podcast crew have launched their new Spirited Chats! These are shorter podcast episodes that will be woven in between our regular Spirited Conversations for pediatric practitioners. Think of them as little companions for your week: a quick way to revisit an idea, sit with it, and bring it into your next session. If you are already subscribed, these will show up in your feed like a normal episode, or you can listen to the first Spirited Chat right here.

Live LJ Community Events: Fall 2026

  • Live Discussions will occur on October 22nd, November 19th, and December 17th

LJ Live Discussions are
at 2:00pm MT

Upcoming Events...

Today is the first live case processing for our self-paced SpIRiT© course as part of our new Study Group model, and there’s still time to join! Right now if you sign up for the self-paced course, you will also get access to:

  • The Learning Journeys Community, through the end of your enrollment in the course, which includes an archive of case processing and forum discussion recordings. 💻

  • A private discussion board in the community that is actively moderated by the Learning Journeys team to respond to questions as you progress through the course. 🗣️

  • Today’s live case processing opportunity facilitated by Tracy Stackhouse, plus one more! We will watch a video case and then see the entire SpIRiT clinical reasoning process in action. 💬

*Those who have already taken courses with us are eligible for a discount - email us at learningjourneys@developmentalfx.org to learn more!

DFX Learning Journeys Opportunities:

Self-paced versions of the SpIRiT© and STEPPSI© are always available to support your learning.

If you have a group that would like to set up a private cohort (5+ people) to work through either the SpIRiT© or STEPPSI© courses, reach out to us at learningjourneys@developmentalfx.org!

Other Ways to Join Us in 2026:

OCTOBER

  • Tracy’s introduction to S-A-M (sensory-affect-motor). This is a great place to start if you haven’t yet taken the SpIRiT© course, as SAM is the foundation of this clinical reasoning tool!

  • DFX team members Sam Mulvey and Kaitlyn Darbe presenting “The Power of Two: Enhancing DIRFloortime with Dual Adult Engagement.”

  • Mind 2 Mind Courses is hosting Tracy in Sydney, Australia for a two-day course focused on praxis, “Sensory Integrative Processing Treatment Approaches for Praxis Capacities: From Sensory DIscrimination to Skillfullness.” Learn more here!

NOVEMBER

CPD Retreats is hosting Tracy for a second time as she leads A Spirited Retreat - an immersive learning experience in Bali, Indonesia, focused on the SpIRiT© model. Retreat participants will take the online SpIRiT course and then join together for a week of in-person, in-depth application of the tool in small groups. We are frequently asked for more opportunities to learn how to use the SpIRiT in practice, and this is an incredible opportunity to do just that! This retreat is currently full - you can learn more here.

DECEMBER

Tracy and our colleagues Gretchen Kamke and Amy Lewis are presenting at the AOTA Children and Youth Specialty Conference in New Orleans. Their work, part of the upcoming ICDL Clinical Practice Guidelines, titled “Clinical Practice Guidelines for Occupational Therapy in DIRFloortime Practice: Defining OT's Unique Contribution” will be shared on December 3rd from 2-5pm.
