Greetings,
As we welcome the growing season, we’d like to share a friendly reminder about the importance of removing stakes from young trees once they are established.
While tree stakes offer important support during the early months after planting, leaving them in place for too long can actually do more harm than good. Over time, stakes and ties can restrict natural movement, weaken the trunk, and even damage the bark or roots.
How to Tell if It’s Time to Remove the Stakes:
- The tree stands upright on its own without leaning.
- The trunk feels sturdy and doesn’t wobble when gently shaken.
- The root system appears to have taken hold in the soil (usually within 6 to 12 months of planting).
- There are no signs of rubbing or cutting from the ties on the trunk.
If your tree shows these signs, it’s likely ready to thrive without support. Removing the stakes encourages the tree to develop a strong, stable trunk and root system that can better withstand wind and weather.
We appreciate your help in keeping our landscape healthy and beautiful!
