Greetings Family,

Eckhart Tolle, in his book A New Earth, said "The ego in its blindness is incapable of seeing the suffering it inflicts on itself and on others. Unhappiness is an ego-created mental-emotional disease that has reached epidemic proportions. It is the inner equivalent of the environmental pollution of our planet."

The 18-year old man who killed children was in the grip of his ego, and he was no longer aware of his suffering or anyone else's. When we are unconscious (not aware of who we are as a divine being), the ego takes over. It's then about power, fame, money, greed and self-aggrandizement. Negative states of ego such as envy, hatred, discontent, resentment, jealousy, anger, and anxiety become totally justified. We don't see them as something we've created but rather as something caused by someone else or some other external factor.

That is what is happening on the planet right now. In our unconsciousness, the ego has run amuck. We are disconnected from our own suffering and unhappiness. We can justify any behavior when we no longer have any connection to the essence of who we are. We become immune to the suffering of this world and to the people in it. The killing and greed, the need for notoriety and power, the struggle to be seen and heard come from such inner disconnection and unhappiness.

So how do we become conscious of what we are creating? How are we contributing to our own suffering? We can ask ourselves, do we enjoy the feelings of our own negativity or do we find those feelings useful? Right there, in the awareness of that moment, you can identify the ego operating in you. You can see that you have created your own suffering and you have the opportunity in that instant to change your thinking. At that moment, you have moved from your ego into awareness.

We are here to wake up. It does not serve us to hate the one who would kill. We are one body, one mind. This is us. Our job as seekers of truth is to shine the light wherever there is darkness, to bring the love where there is hatred, to believe in the power of love to heal all separation in everyone everywhere. Are you with me?

In peace and love, Rev. Karen
