#justB Empowered: Espi's story
Espi found out that she has hepatitis B when she was 64. For some time, she was monitored every six months, but eventually a doctor told her she could die if she didn’t begin treatment. Instead of automatically taking his advice, she researched her options. She also kept active, ate well, and tried not to worry. Finding a support group helped her to decide on her own terms to take medication, when she had all the information she needed.

Espi's story is available in English and Tagalog.

Comprehensive hepatitis B program in Vietnam provides an excellent model for other countries
Vietnam is among the nations with the heaviest burden of hepatitis B, with at least 8% of people infected, studies have shown.

The prevalence may be closer 10%, according to Doan Y. Dao, MD, a native of Vietnam, and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. That means with a population of approximately 100 million, nearly 10 million residents may be living with hepatitis B, which in part is why Dr. Dao went into the field of hepatology and has focused on hepatitis.

Impact: This is the first population-based community HBV study to estimate the prevalence of HBV statuses in Vietnam. Use of three sero-marker screening for HBV enabled researchers to distinguish among those who were: HBV susceptible population (negative all three seromarkers), chronic carriers (HBsAg(+)), HBV exposure with immune control (anti-HBc total (+), with or without anti-HBs), and HBV vaccination (anti-HBs(+) without HBsAg). Researchers also found wide variations in HBsAg (+) and HBV vaccination rates between districts, risk factors, and socio-economic statuses. This study demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a large-scale comprehensive HBV screening and access to care program in an HBV endemic country that involved collaboration among diverse stakeholders including government, health care institutions, community organizations, and private sector.
