Once a week, my team of three and I meet for a check-in. We pile into a room called the “Creative Suite,” prized for its comfortable chairs, and start with a few minutes of silence to clear our minds. Then we share what has gone well over the past week, and what has been challenging. Finally, we consider a discussion question; something like: “What’s a job task that used to be hard but has become easier over time?”
The atmosphere is relaxed. We talk about work, or other parts of our lives, as we see fit. Conversations regularly lead to peer learning, and often, bursts of laughter loud enough that I hope we aren’t disturbing our co-workers. This is our version of team-building: informal sharing that also accounts for the lives we lead outside the office.
