Author visit inspires readers and writers at Rodgers Forge Elementary
Grade 5 students at Rodgers Forge Elementary School enjoyed a very special visit on Nov. 4 from award-winning author Roland Smith. Among many other novels, Smith wrote  Peak , about a 14-year-old boy who climbs Mt. Parenting Tip of the Week:

We want to hear from you about our policy on parent and family engagement

Parent and family engagement is an important touchstone for Baltimore County Public Schools. More than a concept, it is vital to providing the educational resources the school system provides. It guides discussions and policy-making at all levels of our team. It is vital to collecting feedback and direction about where we as a school system and community need to go. And it is crucial to ensuring the every child in our schools is supported and has the opportunity to gain skills that will serve them well in the 21 st century and beyond.

In fact, the Board of Education of Baltimore County has included the importance of parent and family engagement in its policies and rules since 1991, when Board Policy 1270 was first adopted. The policy discusses the value it places on parent and family engagement and its relation to student success. You may view the policy here.
.
This fall, BCPS is reviewing Policy 1270 to make sure it is up to date and reflects the importance of the relationship BCPS has with its parents and families. And, of course, we always welcome your comments about the policy or about the parent-BCPS relationship. To add your viewpoint on Policy 1270, please send your comments to [email protected].  We look forward to hearing from you!

A weekly memo from the superintendent

Dear Team BCPS:

This week, BCPS hosted representatives from around the nation who visited our Lighthouse and Passport schools to see firsthand how we are implementing our Theory of Action.

Our visitors were in Baltimore attending the 2016 League of Innovative Schools' Fall Conference. I am very proud of our students, teachers, and administrators who welcomed these special guests into our classrooms to show them outstanding teaching and learning. I also extend my thanks to all members of Team BCPS who were involved in the planning and implementation of these visits. Our visitors were impressed, and it was truly an amazing experience for all of us.

We all know how important student attendance is to student success in school. This month is BCPS Attendance Awareness Month. I encourage all of you to share what you are doing to increase student awareness about how essential it is to come to school.  Share your strategies at #TeamBCPS and #SchoolEveryDay.

This month, Team BCPS kicked-off its 2016 United Way Campaign. Visit here to learn what you can do to help our community.
