Philly to install curb-protected bicycle lanes

Philadelphia officials are transforming parts of the city’s streetscape to improve use by busses, cyclists, and pedestrians.


Mayor Jim Kenney has set a goal to add curb separation to 40 miles of bike lane by 2026, for example.


Other enhancements include raised asphalt, sidewalk bumpouts for bus riders, and elimination of car lanes.

PA set to recognize multistate licensure for nursing

Beginning in early September, Pennsylvania will allow registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) with multistate licenses to work in the Commonwealth.


This effort aims to minimize the nursing workforce shortage will improving patient care and service.


Rep. Bridget Kosierowski, who serves a Northeastern Pennsylvania district and is herself a registered nurse, sponsored the bill that facilitated this action.

Conservancy acquires acreage in York County

The Lancaster Conservancy is raising $4 million to secure approximately 300 acres of land along the Susquehanna River.


It contains old-growth forests with diverse plant and wildlife.


Protecting the land also extends protection to waterways and the life within them.

In Baltimore, full-time infant care costs more than $200 weekly (on average) – over $10,000 per year.


Black mom entrepreneurs launched The Cube to help navigate the childcare challenge.


It is a coworking space with an affordable babysitting service.

Satellites meet internet needs in rural Alaskan communities

Many people who live in rural areas struggle to access reliable and affordable broadband service.


Low-orbit satellites are alleviating this issue in many parts of Alaska.


This service will not replace installation of superior fiber optic in the coming years, but it will remain available and function as a helpful backup to the fiber optics that are vulnerable to shredding by sea ice.

Limited resources prevent many communities from building resiliency

Extreme weather events are projected to increase in the coming decades, so efforts to build community resiliency are vital.


In regions vulnerable to flooding, for example, levee systems and infrastructure for drainage are critical.


Under-resourced areas struggle to maintain their aging systems and therefore among the most vulnerable.
