Communities Receive Federal Help to Address Climate Change

The federal government has identified which areas Pennsylvania are at high risk of extreme weather disasters related to climate change.

The 483 new “community disaster resilience zones” will have prioritized access to federal money for resilience and mitigation projects.

The funding will support city planning and project execution regarding environment restoration and protection against extreme weather.

PA Granting $800,000 to Support Veterans Employment Programs

The Shapiro Administration has announced plans to expand the Veterans Employment Program (VEP) across Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry announced that $800,000 in grant funding will support VEP projects that connect veterans with competitive job opportunities and address barriers to gainful employment.

These initiatives may include job training programs, career counseling services, and networking events that help bridge the gap between military service and civilian employment.

Chester County Joins Whole-Home Repairs Efforts

Chester County officials have furthered efforts to support low- and moderate-income homeowners.

These individuals may to eligible to receive up to $25,000 for repair costs through the Whole Home Repair Program.

Similar programs in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wayne Counties help residents address habitability and safety concerns, energy or water efficiency needs, accessibility requirements.

Nobel Prize in Economics Goes to Expert on Women at Work

Claudia Goldin of Harvard University is the 2023 winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics for her research of women in the workforce.

Her primary studies include the role of women in the labor force throughout history, as well as causes for the lasting pay gap between men and women.

The third woman to win this prize, Goldin’s work continues to examine contemporary barriers and solutions to women’s work issues.

Nonprofit Uses Technology to Help People with Disabilities Enjoy the Great Outdoors

A West Virginia nonprofit organization specializing in adaptive sports has added Cimgos, rugged downhill wheelchairs, to its selection of mountain bikes.

Challenged Athletes of West Virginia(CAWV) is partnering with the Snowshoe Mountain resort to include adaptive programming for people with disabilities who want to participate in outdoor activities.



BikeScranton, which loans adaptive handcycles and recumbent bikes to individuals with disabilities, fulfills a similar mission in NEPA.

Kentucky Sees Benefits in Making Child Care Free for Child Care Workers

Last year, all childcare workers in Kentucky were deemed eligible for free child care of their own, regardless of household income.

This development is a response to the industry's staffing crisis,

and subsequent limitations to the availability of care.

Thirty other states have shown interest in adopting similar programs.
