Philadelphia Program Aids Students from Underserved Communities

The Academy at Penn is a new, fully funded five-year initiative led by Penn’s Graduate School of Education and several city school districts.


The academy, backed by $8 million in funding, is designed to support up to 200 first-generation and under-resourced students through academic, emotional, social, and career-focused programming.


The model, which includes internships, hands-on education, and immersion classes, hopes to boost student outcomes in high school and college into early career advancement.

Philadelphia Cancer Centers Form Coalition to Address Disparities

The Philadelphia Communities Conquering Cancer (PCCC) Coalition is a citywide initiative that unites academic institutions, cancer centers, and local organizations to address cancer disparities by focusing on prevention, early detection, and equitable patient treatment.


This program brings community members together through educational sessions, training courses, and collaboration with organizations to raise awareness, increase screenings, and allocate resources.


In 2023, PCCC convened a community-driven research agenda that launched efforts to decentralize cancer screenings to reduce accessibility barriers.

PA Communities Could Tax More for Fire and EMS Services

The Pennsylvania House has approved House Bill 393, which would increase the fire tax limits from $3 million to $10 million, and EMS tax limits from $500,000 to $5 million for second-class townships, addressing stagnant limits dating back several decades.


This new tax limit increase aims to reverse the recent closure of dozens of fire and emergency service departments.


This change empowers municipalities to increase staff, update equipment, and improve response times without raising taxes as demand for first responders continues to grow.

In CA, Brightline High-Speed Rail Plan Spurs Urban Rethink

Brightline West’s proposed 218-mile high-speed rail link from Rancho Cucamonga to Las Vegas has prompted a rethink of urban development.


The privately funded all-electric train, capable of speeds over 200 mph, is supported by a $3 billion federal grant and expected to be operational by 2028.


This railway will bring new jobs, reduce highway congestion, and increase tourism, allowing for urban rails to become a new key discussion point in how urban spaces are evolving.
